  • Leaky fuel shutoff valve - could use your help astjp2 (Tim)

I'm getting ready to test run my Taylorcraft after a partial restoration. The main tank hasn't had any fuel in it for about 4 years. I've got a new tank in one wing and the original tank in the other. All new lines. I've put 5 gallons of fuel in each wing tank and leak checked them. Then I transferred that fuel to the fuselage tank to leak check it. I thought I was about to be good to go, but I've noticed that my fuel shutoff valve on the bottom of the fuselage tank is weeping - especially when it is being actuated.

Any suggestions? Is it fixable, or does it need to be replaced with something more modern? I see that Tim (astjp2) never got the STC for the valve he was making. Is it possible to get him to help me make an owner produced one? (I tried to send him a personal message but I get and error message stating that he has too many personal messages - maybe the spam attack? )

Here is what I did years ago when restoring my first airplane (J-3). Disassemble - lap in with very fine rubbing compound - finish with jewelers rouge - I reassembled with some kind of valve lubricant (obviously gas proof - sorry I don't remember what it was). It did not leak when I was done. BTW - make sure it is not weeping at the tank to valve joint. Good luck

There is an O ring in the gland nut. Need to remove the actuating arm loosen and remove the nut. At this point the internals of the valve may fall out. Theres a spring washer/stop and the tapered valve. Best to keep it all in place if you can. The O ring is an MS29513-010 (not sure on the dash, it may be -011 or 009 i can't remember)

      Reassemble with True Turn lube.
      I'll look for a photo

        See photo below
Unfortunatly I can't see the number on the packet but looking at it in the photo it may even be MS29513-012

Lapping is only needed if the valve fails to stop fuel from flowing to the engine when in the off position.

Ps just noticed the aircraft spruce sticker says -011 so that's probably it!

I have a new valve I can put together, I need your mailing address and I can send it to you. I also need to know what engine, actually email me [email protected] I don’t bother with the originals anymore because mine don’t seep or leak. Tim
