Re: test
How did you like your Pietenpol flight. I'd like to fly in an original to see how it compares to the GN1. I've got a little time in Steve's from the other forum. I'll say one thing about them, when they stop flying they REALLY stop flying.Craig Helm

Re: test
To be fair, Craig, it's my only time in a Piet, and I don't know what a GN1 is (please educate me).
The stall was sharper (shorter wing?), and it would drop like a brick in the flare if allowed (and I am in agreement with your comment...and I was expecting it, and got away with it!)
In summation, I loved it, but I should say that anyone with >200 hours of low, slow, gentle tailwheel would manage it fine. The major difference was the lack of brakes (I fly my Tcraft from the right, so I am used to that), the skid (new to me...requires a burst of power to correct a swing...no brakes, remember?). And open cockpit..well I've been a passenger in several, but it is different when you are pilot in command. But I got used to it.
The one I flew had just completed the 40 hour sign-off, so I was very appreciative of the honour.

Re: test
Looks like yours was an original Pietenpol. The GN-1 (Grega) was a modification of the original design. Continental engine and Cub gear are the main differences I'm aware of. There are others, but my knowledge of them is also limited. The one SteveR over at sp.com bought is a GN-1. I only flew it for a short hop over to a neighboring airport for some fuel. It has brakes and a tailwheel. I guess all those wires and braces make it really draggy at slow speeds.
You can see some of the differences in this pic.Craig Helm
