  • ADS-B out flight test

    Dr. Tim or others.
I have installed and programed a Sky Beacon ADS-B unit in my Stinson. I'm ready to do the flight test. AC 20-165B contains a lot of information on a suggested test flight. Is there a simpler profile that can be flow to accomplish the same goal ? If so, I'm curious as to how you accomplished your flight. Of course I am located in the only place in the United States(that includes Hawaii and the territories of Puerto Rico and Guam) that does not have ADS-B coverage. I will need to go up to Anchorage for the test.

    Bob,

I have the same unit as you do but have not done the flight test yet.

I have not installed the transponder yet.

skyBeacon works fine without it and I planned to never get a transponder then when I saw a TQ for $1300 then I decided to install one.

Without a transponder you cannot get the rebate therefore no need for a test flight.

I expect to have a transponder at the end of the month then I will do a test flight.

Isn't there a test box that some of the bigger avionics shops have that does all the checks without the wheels leaving the ground?

Maybe but to get the rebate you must do a test flight. :-(

You can call Anchorage FSDO and see what they are recommending, but from what I remember, you have to fly a specified altitudes and for a specified amount of time with certain turns so they can prove you were actually flying. I bet it would be not as much as you think. I have actually never done it but I know others that have and it was not hard, think like 6.5K agl, fly 10 minutes, turn 90 degrees left, fly 10 minutes, turn again to the right... for a total time of an hour. I will have to look it up to be sure. Tim

found the basics, but its on the AOPA website:
          https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/...teps-clarified

2 each 360 degree turns, one to the left, one to the right, in ADS-B required airspace, which would be within the anchorage region for international, which is class C and be above 10K, according to the map that AOPA shows as airspace requiring ADS-b
