  • AK Tribe Winter Ski Fly-in

The AK Tribe winter ski fly-in will be on the traditional 2nd weekend of March again this year. It will at the same place as last year, at the Caribou Lake cabin on the Southern Kenai peninsula half way between Tustumena Lake and Kachemak Bay. More details to come on this forum and I don't do facebook so do look for me there.
When discussing the plans for this year's fly-in with regular attendees we decided that our campfire-side stories are starting to get stale and repetitious and we would like to hear fresh ones, so this year we will invite the Stinson AK tribe to join us.

    UPDATE:
I will be at the cabin Friday afternoon and will remain there until everyone leaves on Sunday. The cabin is fully equipped with a propane stove/oven fridge and all the stuff needed to cook with. There will be plenty of food. All you need to bring is your favorite libation, snacks, cigars and a sleeping bag if you plan to spend the night. We have 3 portable generators to pre-heat engines. If you want tie-downs bring some rope that you can leave behind in the ice. We have two ice augers, one power and one manual, for tie-down holes and ice-fishing holes. We have a limited amount of fishing gear so you may want to bring your own gear if you want to fish. The lake has good fishing for very nice Dollies and Kokanee. There will be two or three snowmachines available for us to use. We have a fair stash of mogas and will have 10 gallons of 100LL . If you need more fuel because of range considerations I may be able to stockpile some for you if you let me know. I don't do facebook so if anyone wants to pass this information on to that bunch, that's fine with me. Any questions, you can reply to this post or call me at 907-399-7437.

Hey Bob, I went ahead and posted the info on Facebook. I left off your phone number...a little too public on that platform. If you can post the coordinates for the cabin I will add that. See you in a few weeks.

              Update:
Went to the cabin yesterday to bring out another snowmachine and a 10 gallon supply of avgas. It was overcast with flat-light conditions making it difficult to see the irregularities and tracks in the snow. The only overflow we saw was in the tracks made previously by snowmachines that had frozen over. Land in he path previously made by many snowmachines and once you have slowed down you will be able to taxi off the beaten path toward the cabin. The weather this weekend is predicted to be not as good as I'd like, but since this is Alaska you never know what you're going to get (you know, "like a box of chocolates").
Will monitor 122.75 if I hear someone flying by and try to give an update.

              Bob

AK tribe, it's time for the second annual Taylorcraft/Stinson ski fly-in again. It is traditionally held on the weekend following the start of the Iditarod. This year's fly-in is to be held March 13-15. Hopefully the weather this year will be more cooperative than last year. After my arrival to the cabin on Friday afternoon, we were greeted by a blizzard that lasted well into Saturday night. My grandson, his fiance and I spent most of Sunday digging the airplane out.
For particulars about the upcoming fly-in refer to the posts from last year as we are planning to do it the same way this year.

Went out to the cabin today to dig the snowmachine out or the conex and bring in supplies for the fly-in this weekend. Beautiful day to fly. The lake has no overflow whatsoever and there are some snowdrifts out in the middle but there is a really nice area to land right in front of the cabin. This is the last weekend for crabbing in Kachemak Bay so if the seas are calm as forecast tomorrow Brian and I may take his boat out and see if we can do the "deadliest catch" act and get some fresh tanner crab. We should be at the cabin early in the evening before anyone arrives.

Sure wish I could be there, but I’m on the other side of the world for a bit. Will there be a summer get together?

Probably on floats around Labor Day weekend.
