Bungee Replacement Procedure Needed (Off and On)

Can anyone provide a detailed procedure for the R&R of the bungee shock cords on the BC12-D?

I will be replacing mine in the near term and have read everything I can find on the topic, but haven’t seen a lot of the removal of the old cords. One recommendation was to cut the old cords, but I would like to go to 3 cords as suggested in one note I read, so I will need to remove the old cords in tact.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Intact? Why? ; Three? Why? I'm not from Alaska or anything, but I have made landings on some pretty rough strips. Two GOOD cords have always worked fine for me. They are meant to flex.
Just cut them off. Wear a crash helmet and face shield, though. .
I have had the good luck of using a factory replica tool (borrowed) and it is pretty easy to put them on with it.
I have pictures and drawings with measurements of the tool if you are interested. I would guess some of the ole' timers in this group have the tool.

When you cut the bungee, do so slowly, a little bit at a time to allow the bungee to relieve its stress. And keep your face and appendages well away.

And don't forget to tie your wheels together or support the airframe from the engine lift point or wing jacks.

        Re: Bungee Replacement Procedure

I have tried to remove a cord intact before. Yeah.....that didn't happen!

I ended up just cutting. Getting one off without damaging it is just about impossible (I'm sure it's not impossible, but it is "just about" impossible). Instead of 3 bungies, you might try one Heavy Duty (HD) and one regular bungie. If you cut it off slowly like Carl said, they come off pretty easy with little excitement.

            Re: Bungee Replacement Procedure

Well I have (only recently) removed the cords intact. Used Darren's tool (they're all pretty much the same). These were less than three years old. Anything older, I would suggest discarding them and get a new set..all the hassle of acess is not worth doing again in 12 months time or so!

But I think three cords is a bit excessive...for a B model, try one 9010HD and one 1110 each side. This gives a stiffer ride, but less tendency to "wallow" while taxying in a stiff crosswind.

I have been unable to find a bungee replacement tool. I heard that attempting that job without the tool can be difficult and possibly dangerous . Can anyone forward me info about renting or borrowing a tool?

Its pretty easy with the right tool.

I have not seen a drawing of the bungee installation for a long time but I did see one once.

All I recall that was interesting was that the safety cable went on the landing gear first and then the bungees went over it.

Look in the forum technical resources page for the tool.

I hear everybody talking about bungee tention, but I have the lightest duty bungees on mine and its so stiff the only spring I get is from the tires.Im just wondering why.I put it on floats every year and reuse to bungees every time.I dont have a problem getting them off, with a prybar,,I did buy a tool for installation and that made it Very nice to do,but I cant amagine thinking about using 3 bungees.must be hard on the riggin.

One of us should do a you-tube of the process. Why should it be full of useless pet tricks? In fact, there are a LOT of things we could do you tube vids of that would be good to share. Any of the tribe ever done one?
