  • What's that third cable for?

When I took 822 apart, I was very careful to label the control cables that connect behind and above the sling bench. The main lines connected without much problem (some straining and pulling), but the third cable (the one with the small link holding the end together) doesn't have enough slack, so I'm thinking the turnbuckle will have to be opened to do the job (I'll count threads before unscrewing the buckle).

If I understand the question, the three cables are, two for the elevators and one for the rudder, all on the right side behind the seat and below the baggage sling. One cable on the left side for the rudder. Hope this helps.

      Mike,

If you're talking about the ailerons, it's the balance cable. (makes the system "closed loop") If you don't want to unscrew the turnbuckle, just have someone put a small amount of pressure on an aileron while you hold the wheel steady. Make sure that when you do it, someone makes pictures...here is how I did it.

Mary put pressure on the aileron, I was in the sling on my knees...while putting the cables together, I reached back with one leg and held the wheel steady. I was then able to put the bolt in the turnbuckle. (Dr. says I'll be able to get out of bed in a week...lol) Really though, it's pretty easy. Once you start playing with the aileron movement, you will see how to get some slack. Hope this helps and good luck.

Please explain what you mean by "closed loop"? - Mike

          Mike,
Since you said ABOVE the sling I think you mean the aileron cables. The third one would be the top half of the loop that goes to the control wheel chains. The easiest way to do that entire bunch is to loosen ALL the turnbuckles so you have lots of slack; then you can hook everything up without help.
There are some neat tricks like winding up one cable end (and the turnbuckle) a few turns and letting it unwind to screw on to the eyelet on the other cable end, so you get the same number of starting threads and an untwisted cable. Have fun.

            Mike,
I think I have it now. Ailerons. Closed Loop = The rear cable is connected to the rear of the aileron bellcrank on both the right and left wing. The next cable is connected to the front of the aileron bellcrank on both the right and left wing. Move one aileron and the opposite one moves in the opposite direction. Thats closed loop. The third cable (most forward one) is the cable that comes from the control wheels and is fastened to the forward bellcrank cable with AN3 bolts. Hope I've explained it so you can understand it.
I've got a Service Manual from both WagAero and Univair, and on page 3 of both manuals there is a drawing that shows is connection. It also shows the elevator and rudder cables.
            Hope this helps.

Having a closed-loop cable system also means that mass-balance of the ailerons is not required.
A quick view of the diagram in the service manual looks a bit like an electrical circuit...everything comes around in a circuit, so it all remains neutral from the pilot's point of view.

                OOPS,
Don has it correct, I didn't read you carefully enough, Mike. I just always think of it as two loops, hooked together in the middle, with the 4th "cable" down by your feet. As one of the guys, who has built a lot of homebuilts, said to me, "Taylor sure knew his stuff."
