Leaking fuel cap

Ok, I'm getting sick and tired of leaking stuff.

My new tank leaks fuel out of the cap and down the wing. Very strong smell in flight! I have adjusted it to the point where I can barely get the cap on.

Does anyone know where I can get a REAL gasket and not this leather one? Maybe that will seal better?

Other ideas? Trashbag, silicone, mud daubbers!????? (no gas?)

Hope I get this right since I don't know what type of tank vent you have.
uh... Don't seal the tank, the pressure differential will suck fuel out past a seal.
check Rob's page for a picture of vented cap! Generally, solder a small tube in the fuel cap with the end of the tube pointed into the wind.

It is a wing tank and does have the a vent in the cap AND tank.

TRACTOR PARTS!! I have had good luck with fuel cap gaskets from the local tractor parts house.

HEY! Now that is a good idea.....

Do you remember which Tractor model matched best? Or was there just a gasket bin?

Ford tractor gas cap. I can get the part # for you. Had to plug the built in vents w/ epoxy. (yup soaked a sample in gas for a few weeks) Then drilled a hole in the center and brazed a copper tube, bent w/ sand in it. cost about $9. Wag aero had gas caps w/ the vent tube for around $37 last year; part # E-481-000 Haven't tried it for fit yet as the owner-built one is still working.

Howdy Richard,

I had a similar problem after the rehab. Orig tried leather-didn't work! Then went to rubber-was better but still had a small leak. Finally, got some 1/16 cork gasket material. Hard to get the caps on but no more leakage!!!!

I have had leaky caps to the tanks,they don't have any vents, just the bent tubing on the cap. I cant understand: Why vent the tank as well?
My right tankcap is leaking but I used leather gaskets and it solved the problem.
The left cap has more bend in it then the right, maybe more air got into the right cap points more straight ahead = higher pressure.
Two vents on the same tank or am I misunderstanding your writing?

I had the same problem did everything come to find out i had a small crack where the fillerneck is welded to the tank. I hope thats not yor problem but you might check it out.

How did you fix the crack on the filler neck? I have the same thing.

I used j-b weld and it worked for awhile. finaly i bit the bullet and had the tank taken out and had it welded. It was a long crack it was half way around the neck. If it isnt a verry big crack you might try j- b weld it worked about a year on mine.

Cracked or loose filler necks are often caused by allowing a heavy fuel nozzle to rest in the neck and wrench it. Always support the fuel hose, and make sure others do too!

Never let anyone else support the nozzle while it is in the neck, don't let anyone else refuel your plane! EVERY time I have let someone else put fuel in my plane I have ended up having to push it back to a quiet corner of the ramp with the doors tied open to let the gas fumes from the over-fill evaporate. I don't know what the problem is with Taylorcrafts (I admit to having done it myself a couple of times) but NOBODY puts fuel in my plane any more but ME!

Hank (Had a time where the filthy rag came out of the back pocket to wipe my windshield before I could stop him once too. Where do these guys come from?)
