tail wheel steering / rudder horn

I need to take some of the slop out of the tail wheel steering horn that bolts into the bottom of the rudder. I understand the late 46' bc12d rudders had a welded steel control horn for TW steering. Does anyone have a pic or the dimmentions of the control horn so I can modify my rudder? I have been unable to find a new cast alum. steering horn.

Is it the horn itself? I had to tighten the 3 bolts that hold mine in. Actually, I had to tighten them a lot because they kept stretching. I ended going up one size AN bolt (replacing all three) and haven't had a problem since.

I have my cast Ali steering horn off the rudder at the moment...which dimensions do you require...or photos?
Could you weld one yourself from steel as an "owner produced part"?

the steel one is actualy welded to the bottom of the rudder. Kinda like the upper one where the control cables connect. I had to make a repair to my steering arm in Montana last year. The post was cut off the tiller, and a new one was welded in place. Shim material was used to take up the minor slack between the post and the ID of the rudder. If I could get a new t-craft steerig arm I would weld up the holes in the rudder and drill new ones. If I had to weld up the holes, I would rather weld on a steel plate for steering like the late 46' and on rudders.

I have a pre-war BC-12-65 and a post war BC-12D. Both of them have tailwheel steering flanges (cranks?) welded to a piece of tube that slides up into the rudder post and is secured with two bolts. I have never seen one with the arms welded to the rudder post (except for the rudder control horns). If no one else has one off I am painting my 41 and can take measurements to make a drawing for an owner manufactured part. Contact me off group at [email protected]

Some rather than the cast insert one and the spring steel insert are welded arms just like the Elevators. Mine is like that , Mar-April BC12D. They are the best... the holes do wear a bit but can be bushed or welded at rebuild. I have attached a photo , mainly showing the banner tow hook, BUT under the grease, grime & wet soil ( mud) you can see my horn...And such a horn it is!!

Forrest, Is there any problem with me guessing at the dimmentions and making my own? Does the foundation have such information?
