  • Slick 4370 Mag rebuild

You guys are great, and I appreciate all the good advice I have received.

Do you have a favorite Mag rebuild shop you like to use for exchange or rebuild? I have Slick 4370 non-impulse mag that started acting up once I got the plane to the airport and the wings on.

I also have a Slick 4252 and a Slick 4351 that have impulse couplers on them. Do you know if it's possible to convert them to non-impulse, as I have a clearance issue with the firewall but I think the mags are in good order.

p.s. My engine is an O-320-E2D off of a Cessna 172

Just bought a rebuild from Kelly, and got an answer, No you can't convert a impulse mag to non impulse. The case, shaft length, and magnets are all different.

Aircraft Magneto service, if you cant use what you have, they maybe able to swap with something you can use. They are up in Montana. Tim

What you bought is an overhauled magneto, not rebuilt. There is a difference. According to the fellow from Slick who spoke at our IA renewal conference Kelly is not replacing all of the parts that Slick consideres mandatory replacement parts for overhaul. In fact most shops are not replacing all of the recommended parts. Another thing worthy of note is that Slick is now offering an overhaul parts kit with all of the recommended replacement parts at reduced pricing compared to buying the parts individually.

Yes, in the past I had mags overhauled by a guy near Marysville, but now the parts kits are as expensive as an exchange I think he stopped doing it. With the 500 hour service requirement the overhaul seems like a safe but economical alternative. Kelly insists that the mags are done right when I spoke with them. I also have a new Pmag on the left now so I should be good to go.

I second Tim's recommendation. I have had them do an Inspect and Repair as necessary on both my Comanche and Taylorcraft's mags. They did first-rate work at a fair price.
