  • AK tribe annual ski fly-in

Hey all, I apologize for getting this posted so late but I just got home yesterday form visiting America and all I can say is that I'm sure glad to be back home in Alaska. Traditionally, the winter ski fly-in is held the weekend after the start of the Iditarod and this year that makes it March 10-11, with perhaps a weather date of the following weekend. This year the weather on the southern Kenai Peninsula has been horrible for flying. The snow-thaw-rain-freeze cycle has turned our runway and taxiways here at Anchor River Airpark into glare ice and it has been unusable for skis or wheels since early December. There hasn't been a hangar door opened here since then and some of us have actually talked about putting studs on the tires LOL.
I haven't been able to fly over to Caribou Lake to check on the snow and lake conditions but I hear that the snow conditions in the Caribou hills are pretty good. I plan to go to the cabin on a snowmachine this week and will check out the conditions and give you a pirep. Stay tuned and check this posting for updates.
For those who haven't been to Mike and Bob's cabin, it is located on the northeast shore of Caribou Lake directly across from the island, lat/lon N59° 54.3' W151° 02.2' and can be found on the Seward Sectional about half way between the east end of Tustumena Lake and Kachemak Bay. The cabin is fully equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay. I will provide the food and all you need to bring is a sleeping bag, your favorite cigars, liquor, snacks and something else to eat if you're a vegan. If you want to do some ice fishing for dollies or kokanees , bring your own fishing gear, we have an ice auger (manual). We have generators to plug in your airplane for pre-heat and a small stash (10 gals) of avgas if you need it to get home. Bring tie-down rope if you like and we can bore mooring holes in the ice. If I can't fly out, I will go to the cabin by snowmachine. I plan on being there on Friday afternoon and you certainly can come out then if you like. If you have any questions please call me at 907-399-7437.

Re: AK tribe annual ski fly-in

Finally got a usable runway today for first time since just after Thanksgiving. Flew locally to test fly the replacement engine in my Stinson. I plan to snowmachine to the cabin on Wednesday to check out the snow/ice conditions on the lake. I will leave a snowmachine there for us to use during the fly-in. I will post a report on this site when I get back. Hope to see you there this weekend.

Took a snowmachine to the cabin today. Lake conditions are perfect for ski flying. If you don't want to spend the night, you're welcome to drop in for lunch or just say hello. Look for the windsock in front of the cabin.
