  • Handheld radios and unshielded igntion

    Hello All,
I'm beginning my search for a BC12D and was wondering how much it costs to replace the unshielded for shielded ignition parts. Is it just the plugs, or wires, or both?
Thanks, I've been lurking for a while.

    Hello Mike, and welcome!

I've been using an Icom ICA20 handheld (with an external aerial) for many years, with unshielded plugs and don't have a problem. So get an old ICA20 and save the money changing the ignition wires etc.

More recent (modern?) radios may have ignition issues, but I'll let others chime in here.

If there's pulsed ignition noise then source a radio that has an ANL (Automatic Noise Limiter) function. Most handheld ICOM's do, and other brands may. It can help blank or reduce the issue by eliminating the pulse from the recovered audio chain.

Yes, plugs and wires is the most common changeover. Tim

Never had a problem in my Taylorcraft due to that noise reduction button on most handhelds. I had a external antenna
on top of the fuselage. She now has the new Slick Mags and wires etc. Wonder if it is shielded?
You could always wrap lead foil around the wires and spark plugs, Lol
