Where to find aircraft for sale?

So I am starting the process of purchasing my first Taylorcraft.

I have done my research through this forum and learned a ton from everyone's input from various posts.

The guidance I am looking for is where besides the two main websites can I find available aircraft?

As a recently retired Army aviator I am more than ready to get back into the air.

Any guidance and advice would be appreciated.

If I'm guessing, the "two main websites" are barnstormers and trade-a-plane? I look at global plane search occasionally, its fairly comprehensive but more work to navigate with lots of ads and links compared to other sites.

Actually THIS is one of the best sites. I am pretty sure most Taylorcrafts are sold within the community (at least the best ones). Most of us are pretty particular who will get our baby after we are too old or get too many. The folks here share our love for the type and know who is thinking of selling or know people who want one. Keep you eyes open and remember you will NOT save money by getting a fix up plane! NO ONE makes money fixing up old planes.......but it sure is fun!

Since this is my first aircraft, a good condition (not perfect) airframe is what I desire! I want to spend time in the air and not the hangar! Eventually I wouldn't mind that (as I am eyeing a great long term project)...but now I want to get back into the air.

Buying and owning airplanes can be like jump shopping for used cars, or better like buying someone's well cared for Taylorcraft. Which would you prefer? The latter I assume.

I'd like to know the current owner, request a through pre-purchase inspection from someone that knows the model (most young mechanics do not), collect the aircraft's records on file (http://aircraft.faa.gov/e.gov/ND/), but previously fly in some to see what best suits your needs and budget...model year, engine, equipment, condition, history, etc.

It's not a stop and shop process without time and does involve some anxiety and compromises. Lay out your expected operating requirements and radius of operation. Consider how the plane will be used and maintained. Buy what you need up front and don't get trapped into deferring what you want for later upgrades...it's cheaper to buy it than build it unless you like projects vs flying.

Looks like Terrie Barwegen's plane. I think he is in San Jose. He is on the opposite coast from me. Anyone local know about the plane?

This is off thread a little, but I saw this Taylorcraft when it was at Poplar Grove airport (C77) after completion. Even if you don't like the paint colors or scheme, it was a good looking airplane.

Did you mention what model Taylorcraft you are looking for? What engine? LSA or not?
Why are you buying it for, in other words, are you looking for a Taylorcraft that need some TLC? Or are looking for a time builder and sell in a few years. If one that needs TLC you will put more money in her than you can get back if selling. If your looking for a lifetime keeper buy the best out there that some guy or gal has put more money in her than he or she can can't get back.

I am looking for a keeper. There is something about owning a fun machine that I can fly and be proud of. I have a long list of wants, needs, nice to have. I have plenty of hours and don't desire to build time but rather get back in to the sky and enjoy the sites. I am not limited on a particular model or engine size yet. I know my needs and several can fit...again this is a keeper plane so I want to ensure I find the one that fits my needs the best (no such bird as all encompassing) .

You also will want a mechanic who knows Taylorcraft and fabric airplanes. F-19 is one of the more desirable models to have because it already has the big baggage, 100 horse power and is one of the newest models built. I like the KISS concept, the less crap in the dash, the more you will actually look outside the cockpit. A good prebuy is critical when looking, its worth the money to have a good inspection, that way you know what you are getting into. Good luck. Tim
