    All the good ones are far away

    Greetings all:
    I haven't posted here for ages but i'm getting the bug again. Here's a nice one:

    The logistics of having it retrieved from Prince Edward Island (up there off of Nova Scotia and Maine), and getting it imported, annualed and flown clear across the US to Reno Nevada are boggling. Still, it looks like an awfully nice airplane for small money. Flying it home with Canadian numbers on the side might be easier though FAA doesn't like that, nor does CAA. They like it deregistered prior to entry into the US. I dunno.

    I have two non airworthy airplanes now, it would be awfully nice to own one that flys.

      Do you know where in PEI the plane hails from? (I've spent a lot of time in PEI over the years.)

          just in case some are not as keenly aware of the exchange rate, that's under US$14,000

          of course the fabric is 18 years which is past its half-life

            It does look very enticing. I doubt I'll be living another 18 years. My kids can worry about the fabric. I suspect that for me to just go look at it would cost about 5 grand. The last time I bought an airplane out of Canada I trucked it home, but that was only from Edmonton. Charlottetown is another story especially since Canada won't let me fly it home. There are other airplanes of course but that one looks especially nice even after spending an arm and a leg to repatriate it. Oh well. I should probably call Forrest B. If he got it to Ohio I could take it the rest of the way.....provided it's airworthy.

            PS: Your project looks terrific!

              The fabric will be fine, the finish and degree of damage due to fabric tautening are concerns. The ad says Ceconite which means dope. Dope continues to shrink throughout the life of the fabric and that can cause problems.

              No problem if you want to fly the aircraft home. As a US pilot you can fly a Canadian registered aircraft in the US. As part of the sales deal you get the current owner to fly the aircraft to the nearest US airport of entry (Bangor perhaps). Once you have it in the US you can fly it home. Once you get it home you start the deregistration/registration process. While doing the prepurchase inspection you can get a CofA for export which should reduce the work you need to do for issuance of an FAA CofA (US and Canada have a Bilateral agreement on certified aircraft).

                Thanks Scott. I made an attempt to contact the owner yesterday as instructed in the ad with no reply and then today the ad is gone. Too bad. I talked to Forrest and he wasn't sure what in the heck it was....there are apparently no 1951 BC12-D Taylorcraft. In any case there are several nice airplanes around the country, just not quite as cheap as that one. I've bought cheap before, with outcomes sometimes good sometimes not so much.
