  • Aileron Question

Have a BC-12-65. Left Aileron is warping on the trailing edge. Aircraft is hangared and the aileron has been on the aircraft for ten years after cover; it's been a slow process. Interested to know if a serviceable left aileron is available out there; hopefully, just requiring minor repairs & cover. Has anyone ran into trouble matching hinge points when you try to use an aileron from a different aircraft? Any information appreciated.

    Re: Aileron Question

You might be able to find an aileron, but if it was me I would just fix the one you have. What covering process was used when the airplane was recovered?

      Re: Aileron Question

I have ailerons, but the cost to ship from SE Virginia to CA would be ridiculous. Tom Baker has the right answer. You need to open it up and find out the problem, then repair it (unless there is an aileron close). It is MUCH less expensive to ship the parts needed for repair than to ship a whole assembly! Hinge point alignment can be handled if it is a problem.

Thanks all for getting back to me. The aircraft was covered using the Ceconite covering process. It looks like its best to repair what I have. I will check with Jerry in Madera if things go bad. Thanks again.

If it was covered with Ceconite and dope, the fabric was likely shrunk to much before the finish was applied. The dope continues to shrink after application and on a light structure can cause it to deform.

When you get the fabric off take and post lots of photos. All the parts you will need are out here and people may well see some things you might miss (plus we all love watching someone do a project like this).

                Hi Jerry,

Thanks for getting back to my post regarding the Left Aileron. I am located in Grass Valley CA. not too far from your location. I am interested to talk to you about your left aileron. My aileron is still airworthy and I hope to enjoy the summer flying season. If I could get a replacement aileron up and going and swap it out, that would be my goal. It sure would be nice not to be pushed as repairs always take longer than one thinks. Let me know your number and I will give you a call. [email protected]
