  • Chino / Flabob visit 19 April 2017

A group of us in four Taylorcraft are hoping to make it from the mid-west to Chino in April, hoping to arrive there on or around the 19th April, if anyone would care for a meet-up.
The four pilots are me , Mike Jones and Mark Bowden (all of this parish) and Jim Z.

We are hoping to visit the various museums in Chino, so any pointers on who to see (or get to know) for the "private collections" would be most welcome.

Rob- With regard to "private collections" ones that come to mind is Bill Allen's place if you are willing to fly 150 miles south to El Cajon (Gillespie Field) just east of San Diego. He has very rare aviation posters and memorabilia as well as a small collection of aircraft. Also at Gillespie Field is the San Diego Air & Space Annex which has a great display. Of course the San Diego Air & Space museum is also worth seeing if you are going to be down that way. Closer to Chino is Bill Turner's collection of 1930's racing aircraft collection at Flabob (Rubidoux/Riverside). In fact you may want to overnight there before going to Chino if you plan to camp out. At Chino there is the Yank's museum... a must see museum, and the Plane's of Fame Museum. At the Yank's museum ask to get a tour of the restoration shop. You can spend all day at these two museums.
    Hope this helps.

Hi Jerry, thanks for your reply .

No, we are not planning to go to Gillespie (time dictates otherwise). But I think we are planning on Flabob.

      Best wishes,
      Rob

We have all made it back from our trip safe and sound. It was a great trip, as we “recover” and get photos sorted we’ll post them and add more trip notes.

We really got lucky on the weather with minor rain/wind rerouting to start off and had some challenging winds on a couple early days of the trip with some days seeing ground speeds in the 30’s and 40’s. Ugh!

But were blessed on the last two days with ground speeds in the 120-130’s and touched the low 140’s.

However what really made the trip was our fellow EAA'rs & Tcraft owners for their outstanding, above and beyond hospitality and assistance. That made the trip truly great. Many thanks and hope we can return the favor.

Peter Sodiquist for rescuing us from St. George where wind gusts as high as 43 mph made for challenge of getting and then keeping her on the ground all the way to tie downs!

Jim Meeker at Riverside and Jerry Impellezzeri for helping show us around Planes of Fame and Yanks (plus breakfast at Flo's).

And Jim O’Brien for hospitality at Riverside, both place to stay and maintenance point as well as tour of Flabob!

Special thanks to Jim for the detailed planning and flight leader duties; we flew as flight of 3-4 the whole way.

I had the short leg as Mike & Rob went on home to 0C0 and Jim back to 2VA. I went through about 165 gallons, 1 oil change, 45 hours PIC time and 3,216 statute miles over 17 flight legs in 10 days.

This photo is at Marble Canyon for lunch.
