Stampede! Drone causes 1,500 elk to charge in Wyoming snow

    Battle of the Drones?

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) -- Wildlife refuge officials say a man with a drone caused 1,500 elk to stampede half a mile.

The stampede happened Monday at the National Elk Refuge in western Wyoming. Elk and bison often congregate at the refuge to eat feed put out to help them survive the winter.

This winter has been especially harsh. More than 3 feet of snow has piled up, conditions that can be very stressful for all kinds of animals.

Disturbing wildlife is a serious offense punishable by a fine up to $5,000.

Refuge spokeswoman Lori Iverson said Thursday refuge officials gave the man from Washington, D.C., a $280 ticket after he launched the drone from a highway pullout and flew it over the resting elk herd. Refuge officials declined to identify him.

Considering that I am a commercial drone operator, I feel insulted.

What that person did was stupid. I don't think it was because they were a drone operator.

Considering that I am a radio control airplane hobbyist, I too am disturbed. These people do whatever they want, just because they can. Jackasses.

Hey, the guy was from Washington, DC. That should tell you what kind of behavior to expect. Chuckle.

        Edit:

Actually people are stupid. Case in point, I know several pilots that are well educated and seeming intelligent about most things. I have seen them do so many dumb-assed things around airplanes that it would take you 10 minutes to read the list I could make.

Me, I am really dumb in my interaction with people, women in particular, Chuckle. Fortunately they are mostly tolerant of my shortcomings.

              WOW!

It is hard to imagine that a drone has the momentum/energy to break thru an apartment window.

I had imagine those windows were thick tempered glass for safety on the street below.

A Utah lawmaker said Monday his measure criminalizing the use of drones to harass livestock is drawing attention around the country from the media. Utah is on tap to be the first state to outlaw the behavior.

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah is on tap to become the first state in the country to criminalize the use of drones to harass livestock.

HB217, sponsored by Rep. Scott Chew, R-Jensen, passed unanimously in the House on Monday. The bill would make it a class B misdemeanor if a person knowingly uses an all-terrain vehicle, dog or drone to harass or harm livestock.

If the animal is seriously injured or killed and the person has committed the offense before, the crime would be bumped up to a class A misdemeanor, which carries a potential one-year stay in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Chew, a rancher from Uintah County, said the bill is the first of its kind in the country and has been written about in numerous media outlets, including newspapers in Minnesota, South Dakota and Washington.

The lawmaker said he decided to run the measure in response to riders using ATVs to harass livestock just to be "obnoxious."

Chasing or disturbing livestock, he added, can have especially traumatic results on pregnant cows or sheep, as well as the very young animals.

The bill now moves to the Utah Senate.

                  It just keeps coming...

Two days after a drone crashed through the window of a woman’s Manhattan apartment, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he’s going to push a law to protect the public from the flying machines.

The Democratic senator wants Congress to add “geo-fencing technology” to the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization act that will come up for a vote in September.

That would create enforceable no-fly zones for drones, Schumer said.

“There needs to be a clear strategy to address the public safety dilemma of reckless drones in a way that does not impede innovation or responsible use,” he said.

“That’s why requiring geo-fencing technology will effectively fence off drones from sensitive areas like airports or secure buildings,” the senator added.

                  On Saturday a remote-control drone crashed through a 66-year-old woman’s apartment window in a Kip’s Bay high-rise, police said.

The woman, who lives in one of the Waterside Plaza towers off the East River near 25th St., was on her computer when she heard a crash on Saturday around 3:15 p.m., cops said. The drone, a GoPro Karma, landed four feet away from her.

The woman was not injured, officials said. Police were seeking the suspect Sunday.

“If geo-fencing technology were mandated in every drone sold in America, it would go a long way toward preventing the kinds of near-misses we have seen, and still allow hobbyists to fly drones in safe places,” Schumer said.

Amen to that plus the taxes and laws never fix anything that he claims they are needed for.

                            Jail Time For Drone Pilot

                            By Mary Grady

The pilot of a drone that hit a building, then fell into a crowd watching a parade and hit a 25-year-old woman, knocking her unconscious, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail by a Seattle municipal court. Paul Skinner, 38, of Washington, who owns an aerial photography company, was convicted of reckless endangerment, which carries a penalty of up to a year in jail. Seattle Municipal Court Willie Gregory told Skinner last week that he knew the crash was an accident, but he had “engaged in conduct that put people in danger of being injured, which is what happened.” Skinner also was fined $500. Skinner’s lawyer, Jeffrey Kradel, said the punishment was “too severe,” and his client will appeal.

Kradel said his client was singled out for harsh treatment to scare other drone users, and that was an improper use of prosecutorial authority. The drone measured about 18 inches square and weighed about two pounds, according to police reports. The woman who was hit suffered a concussion. Her boyfriend caught her before she hit the ground, and suffered a minor bruise in the incident. A hearing has been set for May 25 to determine the restitution Skinner owes the woman for her medical treatment. Skinner remains free pending an appeal of the jail sentence.
