Re: Adapter plate failed !!!
Well you would need to have it sent to a shop certified to inspect and repair it. the inspection is an NDI and a dimension check for any visible defects (burrs, countersink, threads, corrosion, etc), repair would be consist of what ever is allowed in their part 145 certificate but I would suspect it might consist of media blast or chemical cleaning, deburring and replating. Its all based on what continental said was allowed and what their repair station certificate allows. As and a&p, it might consist of "yep its good" that will be $300 plus an hour of labor to change it. the repair station certificate gets you either an work/repair order with a description of they did, or an 8130-3. Yellow/green tags you get at Walmart.....they mean nothing to the FAA but as a mechanic, I can type up something on one and make the owner feel good. Part of this is sarcasm but that is generally what would happen to a taylorcraft that was flying part 135 and needed 100% certified parts. Part 91 does not require as stringent of a paperwork trail. Re: Adapter plate failed !!!
How would a mechanic determine if an example of the hub adapter being discussed here is airworthy and suitable for installation?

What does Fresno get for a new one?Originally posted by astjp2 View PostI don't need new, I just need good serviceable for what I fly and that's what I have.... There are NOS ones at Fresno but you pay for them. This is not a Cessna...so not much for support, that is why we have to make due or make our own parts sometimes. Tim
Ha!
I found it. http://www.trade-a-plane.com/part-ca...ns&filter=both
$575 for a reconditioned one from Fresno.
Tim and Mark will have good ones also. I was interested in what Fresno would have wanted for a new one because I have a new one that I am keeping to fund my retirement.

Two clicks to the side of the discussion, but here's what I've started reading to inform myself regarding PMA and maintenance parts from an owner's perspective: https://www.faa.gov/aircraft/air_cer.../pma/pma_regs/

I doubt PMA was in play then, was it? Were any of the old Continental parts PMA'd? I doubt it.Originally posted by 3Dreaming View PostDo you think the old original Continental hubs are PMA'd?
But I do believe they came from a qualified source. In this environment the common standard for qualified and legal purchased replacement parts is the PMA system.
What else should we go by?

p.s.- I did not find a PMA approval listed for Classic Aero or any for a prop hub that might have been the one on the site.

Re: Adapter plate failed !!!
Eddie speaks and acts as a Godly man, and for good reason now even more so I suspect. The cracks in the adapter must have been at the right angle to prevent component departure and retain rotation with the crankshaft.
Are there P/N or manufacturer ID's on the OEM hub components? I can see where knockoff dupes would be hard to ID without them. Buyer be advised.

I may ask Eddie and Fred for a look at the parts...not to wash any dirty laundry in public but rather to learn something worth knowing about the composite assembly. That adapter was completely separated around its circumference, appeared to an amateur's eye to have been previously corroded, and showed visible surface wear (I've looked at it up close). Any wear on the starter adapter or prop hub would be enlightening.
From what I know so far the only thing holding the prop to the plane was an interference fit between separated parts of the broken flange. I assume the hub of the prop slips over the adapter hub...and might as well slip off with the separated portion of the adapter still attached (???).

I think its fair to say that before the Luscombe group started making hubs that many mechanics could identify the Continental hubs and inspect them or get them inspected for defects.
The addition of the Luscombe hubs makes it a little more confusing because if I am correct and they are not PMA parts then we should not use them. One give away is that beautiful cad plate finish which the Luscombe hubs have an most TCM hubs don't unless they have been replated or it is a NOS TCM hub.
red-
Yes you are right on. Eddie was very fortunate. What if that prop and partial hub separated and hit the wing? tail? partially separated shook the engine off? or just can cleanly off an hit someone on the ground?
God has something planned for Eddie! Eddie escaped a tight spot.

Edit: Surely some facility or Repair Station (like Aircraft Specialties Serv.) can yea or nay a component. We've done that before but of course to engine parts with an OEM P/N. Much yet to learn regarding this.

Or does the nut and forward ring assembly retain the prop as well?

Thanks Marty, that cracks me up.
I guess you have a 50-50 chance.

p.s. wow $795 for new one and about a $100 less for a reconditioned one. One of my first engineering managers would often debate/discuss tech. issued with comrades in the hall and then say "well that may or may not be true" and invite into to his office for further discussion. That always cracked me up too. It may or may not be true - genius! , who woulda thought it could be so.Last edited by Guest; 05-09-2016, 19:28.
