I think Lisa Marie the Super T had a 180hp. It is a clip wing, but still in standard category. I don't know if it was part of the Swick STC, or done under a different approval. I don't think that STC is available anymore.
Look up the FAA's paperwork records for N3666T and N29694. They have the O-290-D2 installed via a withdrawn STC (may have been a one-timer copied by others). There may also have been O-320/360 conversions like the Factory's last efforts. You'd have to find a plane with one and go from there. Not likely today in Normal Category ops.
PS: N3666T is sitting with the right aileron control pushrod separated from the bellcrank in the wing. Years of neglect under heavy snowload finally separated the cast end of the bellcrank where the ball-end stud attaches. I owned N29694 before the O-290 conversion was done and it's still around somewhere.
Glen Alsworth had a one-time STC, #SA706AL, that was used several times to put an O-320 in the F-19. Forrest Barber told me one time that the O-320 was the best engine that could ever be put in a Taylorcraft. I know of one that has the 160 horse in it and it is one bad T-Craft. If more of this kind of work is done and approved, the T-Craft would be more useable and popular.
Ok. I heard the Alsworth link before but didn't want to spread a wrong rumor w/o seeing the paperwork. Lots of weight up front plus right prop with that mod does what to CG?. Plus then you need 3-4 hrs fuel plus a day VFR reserve to get anywhere with a load. Maybe PK1800 floats too. But yes it'd be a gasser to fly, but in reality there are already 2-pl planes (mainly Pipers) available with that engine that would do as well or better without all the modding and paperwork.
Maybe better just to have a simple T for calm sunny days and another to haul the mail when needed.
Thanks guys. Mine is an F21 (0-235) now on Baumann 1500 amphibs. I was just wondering about more HP for a little more performance. Mine cruises at 92-95mph on floats and 105-110 on wheels. Gets off the water quickly, even with 2 on board so I guess I shouldn't look for more but I do.
PS. I have my 1500 straight Baumanns for sale. Only 3 seasons of use.
For better takeoff performance try a Donaldson P10-7150 air filter. They flow better and offer a higher max intake manifold pressure at full throttle than a Brackett foam unit if that's what's currently installed. Also use whatever approved prop is the longest (72") and pitched to provide the highest legal static rpm (2500 according to the 1A9 TCDS).
Wish you were closer the Alaska...those Baumann floats are the best and outperform others like the EDO 1320's I have and their 1400's.
I've already got the right prop and a K&N (Challenger) filter, flowed and matched cylinders, etc. Power corrupts and I'm corruptible. Come and get those floats. They come with a street legal transport trailer. Rochester, NY and Fairbanks aren't that far apart. I was never good at geography.

Hey it sounds like you got'er dialed in for float ops! That must be a fun ship with the power mods and right float setup. Never operated amphibs but that'd be great for cross country and not having to find a puddle to stop and get fuel. Enjoy your great plane.
I tested the Challenger, Donaldson, and Brackett filters on my former PA-11. The first two were real close in performance (static manifold pressure and rpm) and surpassed the Brackett in both categories. I got only 1" Hg drop from ambient pressure with them and +25-30 static on a digital tach over the Brackett. The loss in MP over no filter installed was negligible on my gauge. The Brackett will loose twice the MP and all the static. All three filters were new and the engine fresh from a major.
Too bad Bud Baumann passed and his successor decided on another life-work choice. I talked with Bud when he first built the 1420's then again when the 1500's (slightly shorter I believe) were certified. There's several sets up here and the folks like the performance. The 1320's do ok up too the mid-1400's but need to be watched in downwind turns on rough water and side gusts.
Geography does play games, but you could sell the straight 1500's easily if they were in Alaska.
