Can some give me an idea of what reasonable, average price for a 6 gal. rh wing tank. Looks to be in good shape without a gas cap. Thanks. JT.

Re: fair price for 6 gal rh wing tank
The last one, a left tank, on Ebay sold for $307.00 and there is a right tank on Ebay for $299.00 right now. He lowered it from $349.00 on his last auction. A lot depends upon condition and what the market is. Hopefully this will give you a little idea, sorry I cannot be more specific. Finding a cap may be a little difficult, too.

These parts are old, somewhat rare to find and even rarer to find for sale.
You may get one for $35 if you are in the right place at the right time or $500 if you need one right away and there is only one for sale.
It comes down to what it is worth to you.
Having one for sale for ~$300 and another sold previously for similar certainly sets expectations.
Find out what Wag-Aero sells new ones for ($479 when they have them) and multiply by .5 or .66 is a reference price also.

Re: fair price for 6 gal rh wing tank
If I were in the market right now for one I'd rather purchase one new, with an FAA Form 4130, from Wickes? Wag Aero? Did I get the name right?
I went through so many "used" tanks that were crap (sorry for the language) that it's just worth biting the bullet and buying a new one. Get one with certification.

Re: fair price for 6 gal rh wing tank
This talk about the wing tank got me to thinking that, hell I might sell the extra right hand tank I have, just went and looked at it and I have one of the coveted left hand tanks beside the right hand that is already mounted, don't know how I missed that.
As for the cap I remember seeing somewhere about how to convert a certain cap to work on ours-it might be in a previous post.

Bird,
That was my posts about the tank cap that was the original cap used to make our Taylorcraft caps. Unfortunately I was advised the company, who for so long manufactured those caps, is no longer making them. So if you want original you will have to find an original.

Re: fair price for 6 gal rh wing tank
I agree strongly with Rob Lees in post #4. I saw one on e-bay and it looked to me like it had pro-seal smeared all over it and some had came off. Just my opinion, but that's what I thought it was. I changed one out once that was repaired several times and tested good I was told. My friend went ahead and covered the wing and after a year or so of flying it started to leak. He bought one from Wag-Aero and I replaced it for him. What a pain in the neck that was. He should have put a new one in the first place, considering that particular tank he used to begin with. Good advice Rob.

Re: fair price for 6 gal rh wing tank
I was looking on Ebay and did find some but they had the thumb? edges (areas on the outside that could be grasped, one on each side) they were part of the cap--mine has 2 flat tabs on each side in place of these and none had the vented 90* aft facing brass vent line although mine looks like it was placed on as a aftermarket item
. Easton gas cap

Re: fair price for 6 gal rh wing tank
Mine with Harer's STC came with a couple of these: http://www.univair.com/atlee-dodge/p...-180-fuel-cap/. The wing tanks empty right now in flight. The STC calls for a forward facing large vented cap of some odd design as I recall from my paperwork. It also has a small vent hole on the back of the tube previously installed (smaller than #40). I've had them freeze up on Citabrias and one Cessna flying in wet snow so not a bad idea (we vented them to the rear with a small hole so no problems were experienced). I also put a vented cap over the inlets when parked to keep debris out and remove them for flight, same for the pitot tube.

Re: fair price for 6 gal rh wing tank
Those are rather large, and ugly (sorry), for wing tank caps. The small hole on the back has been mentioned on here before, more for bugs in the pipe rather than freezing...all depends upon where you live, i guess. I have never had a problem with bugs, or snow, for that matter.Cheers,

Re: fair price for 6 gal rh wing tank
Yes they're ugly (no apologies required as I agree) and for some reason needed on 180 Cubs. Birds like to sit on them. Must be fuel flow at high AOA or ? The Harer STC shows a mod for the stock cap but who has the time these days? They were on the plane so I assume the STC installer bought them in cheaper times. I wonder if a proper vented regular cap like Univair sells for Cubs would suffice on non-85 engines?
Edit: The icing potential is real as is the chance for plugging while parked. Wet impact from snow like we have in the Fall...mixed precip at +- freezing temps...is the worse. But I did have a C-185 freeze one wing vent at 13.5K at -10F in supercooled cloud over the Brooks range (maybe that's why they give you two). Citabria and Cessna put the vents behind structures to delay the process but it's only a delay.
Edit: Spoken for: I still have the original front tank wire and cork gauge and cap that's being unused as there's a F-19 dial gauge previously installed on my header. If somebody needs one let me know.
