  • Open Door Lock

I have designed a door latch for holding the door open. The latch connects to the top door hinge on the door. The lock requires removing the top door hinge bolt, then reinserting the bolt through the lock shaft and the door hinge. A band goes around the lock shaft and the door hinge and attaches with one screw and a locking nut. The total lock and parts weighs 0.81 oz., assembly time is about 10 minutes per door. The door when locked in the open position almost toches the cowling. To operate the door lock requires one hand to open the door and one fanger to press the lever. the door is easily locked in place from inside or outside the aircraft. At this time the cost will be $100.00 for a set of two door locks. If interested please e-mail me at [email protected]. I have not set up production at this time but I'm interested in seeing if there is any interest. Thanks Rex

I use rusty bolts on my door hinges; they stay open on their own.

      Re: Open Door Lock

I would be cautious on marking this, when I was skydiving back in the 70's, the owner installed a door that opened up from the bottom to the top and locked open against the wing-on the 2nd flight which I was on when the door opened the door it departed to parts unknown it was never found and the aft elevator section on the right side was pretty much destroyed. All the jumpers landed about 1 mile east of the Malone skydiving center and the pilot lost his lic for a year for unaproved crap, the owner disapproved knowledge of the new addition.. that's all I am saying

          Re: Open Door Lock

Thanks for your input. When I started the thread I was interested in finding if there was any interest in an open door lock. In answer to the replies, There was {NO} modifications to the door or hinges. The bolt that was removed from the top hinge, is the same bolt and nut that is reinstalled after the bolt is passed through the hole in the door lock. The door lock lays on top of the door hinge and has a thin strap that goes around the flat metal piece on the door that forms the hinge. A #4 screw that goes through the strip only, holds the strip and door hinge in place. the integrity of the door, door hinge or air frame is not effected. The installation of the open door hinge amounts to no more than if you installed an adeal clamp around one of the metal tubes in the cockpit. Thanks again Rex
