I'm replacing the cowl anti-chafe material. Anyone use something better than 1300L? Also, there were wire staples holding down the fabric. Should I replace those with safety wire of smallish pop rivers? Lastly, there are some spring clips in the location of the upper cowl doors (see picture). Are they necessary? Thanks for your advice.

Re: Replacing Cowl Anti-Chafe Cloth
I do not know what 1300L is. I have had a t-craft since 1982 and all I ever have used for cowl anti chafe on it has been felt about 1/8" thick and various widths like 1", 2", 1-1/2".
The felt is glued into place with contact cement.
It has worked fine and I think I recall that it was like that when I got the plane.
I suspect that now I will hear all the reasons that it shouldn't have worked whereas in fact it has.

Re: Replacing Cowl Anti-Chafe Cloth
Look at the bottom of this thread for other info on the chafe material. I got some of the correct 3/4" width material and replaced some that had come off. I will have to look in the cabinet at the hangar to determine the adhesive used. There is info on that thread as to adhesive others have used.
Here is the link of the first thread below: http://vb.taylorcraft.org/showthread...chafe-materialCheers,

Re: Replacing Cowl Anti-Chafe Cloth
It was stapled...not really cost effective because its a machine that installs them, kinda like the felt baffle material that was stapled in. I would just glue it or use weather strip adhesive. TimN29787

Re: Replacing Cowl Anti-Chafe Cloth
I bought conventional felt for my cowl anti-chafe material. Began to glue it on with red silicone. How are you guys making the holes in the material (for the fasteners - Cam locks or whatever?). The material appears to be cotton. I can burn a hole with a very hot iron, but it is not neat. Also, a couple of the holes are not big enough, so now I have find a way of enlarging the holes. This material is very tough and difficult to cut.

Re: Replacing Cowl Anti-Chafe Cloth
The correct chafe material cuts easily. Not sure what you could use, a large punch backed by a wooden block? Harbor Freight sells a set with large punches included. I would use my hand and just twist it back and forth to cut the material.Cheers,

Re: Replacing Cowl Anti-Chafe Cloth
Mike Lutz sourced the correct 3/4 inch anti-chafe strip. It is white and woven, maybe cotton? I used the Harbor Freight hollow punches to make nice holes in the tape, and glued it on with Weldwood Contact cement. Works great 3 years later, it is perfect, if a little dirty.
Only problem was the chafe tape is significantly thicker than felt, our cowling was so tight after installing the chafe tape that we got a small crack near one of the Dzus fasteners.
Do a search on this forum, there is good dialog about this already posted.

Doesn't sound like it is the correct one if its causing cracks. The felt has not done that to my plane.

Re: Replacing Cowl Anti-Chafe Cloth
The chafe tape is correct and caused a single crack because the newish cowl was fabricated around the thinner felt (cowl built very tight). We opened up the cowl slightly by installing looser Dzus fasteners, and it now fits snugly with the new chafe tape. All is good now. Difference in thickness between felt and chafe tape is small, but compounded by the 4-6 foot circumference.
