Hypothetical question....If Wag or Univair produces a gear leg under a PMA, am I under any obligation to procure it from them vs. an owner produced repair/remanufacture?

Re: Owner Produced question
You are talking about 2 different things. A repair is totally allowed, all you need is one tiny piece to be reused, do a 337 for the major repair and you are back in business. An owner produced part is all new materials. I have never seen the documentation for an owner produced part, there will be many ideas on what is required, I would just either repair it or buy a new one.
I am curious to know if you had any corrosion inside your gear leg. Tim
Per the regs, there is no requirement to buy a part....Atlee does repairs and builds parts all the time for cubs, per the owner's instructions...N29787

In other words just because the PMA part is available you are not required to use it in lieu of fixing or making your own.
Is that what you were thinking about in your question?
FYI - I have a landing gear jig.

Is your jig complete enough to build a complete gear? Most are only set up for repairs. Tim

I am just not completely sure whether I could do a from scratch gear in it or not.
Here is a thread that shows pictures in post #6 => http://vb.taylorcraft.org/showthread...t=landing+gear

I forgot to say it in my other post however I do recall and email or thread or an actual discussion where a guy was saying that the FAA office would not give him some approval because there were PMA parts available.
So I would not be surprised that some other FAA guys push/bully the same idea but from a regulation point of view it's bogus.

Re: Owner Produced question
It never makes a lot of sense to argue with the FAA if you are faced with a representative who doesn't really know the regs but does think he is infallible. You may win eventually, but you won't do any flying while the argument gets sorted out (sometimes over YEARS in THEIR courts....look at Bob Hoover!)
LOTS of great people with the FAA, but a few knuckleheads can cause a LOT of problems. A "REPAIR" done well and signed off by your IA will rarely cause problems. I wouldn't want to fight the Owner Produced Part fight on something like a landing gear. Save the end fittings from the old one and get it "repaired" on a good fixture. I WOULD NOT change the design by changing the length of the tubes without getting agreement from the FAA first.
I have fought with the FAA when a Flight Surgeon requested a waiver I SPECIFICALLY said I DID NOT WANT and I was grounded for a year while they decided they were not going to approve it. Even if I had gotten the waiver, it would NOT have been worth it.
