  • New Exhaust System

Information for anyone thanking of purchasing a new exhast system. I purchased a new exhaust system and heat muff from Univair back when I purchased the Taylorcraft. This yaar I was ready to install these parts. The heat muff would not fit their exhaust system and the exhaust system would not fit the 65 hp Continental Engine. I returned the parts to Univair for replacement. They were vary nice and replaced both parts and told me that the exhaust system that I returned fit their fixture. The new heat muff is great and fits with out any problem. the new exhaust system would still not fit the engine. It was off 5/8 of an inch from side to side. I sent the exhaust system out to a company in
Calif. and it was off 5/8 of an inch in their fixture also. Their cost was $200.00 to repair the exhaust and I now have a exhaust system that fits easly to the engine. Also Aircraft Spruce purchases their exhaust systems and heat muffs from Univair. The shop I used will rebuild your old system back to new (all new parts) for probably less then what I paid Univair. Hope this helps some one.

The best thing you can do is call Terry Bowden and get paper work for the luscombe exhaust and Doug at the luscombe foundation and get the exhaust from him.The system is much more free flowing you get better heat it can be removed with out taking the engine off the mount it gets the exhaust heat away from the fire wall and it fits both the A65 and the C85/90/0200 with out any mods. Doug has better heat muffs then other manufacturs. And if you have a cowl from a Lycoming it comes out the stock holes in the cowl if it is continental you need the second hole in your cowl.Oh I forgot to mention it sounds better also.

It works good up until you have to move the gascolator for the short mount in some installations. This requires new gascolator mount and fuel lines.... Tim

Did you get an 85 Exhaust on accident? You may have been sent the wrong one.

                  Re: New Exhaust System

The exhaust system that was ordered was for the Continental A-65. The exhaust system that was receaved was too nerrow, from what the other post said the Continental 85 or O-200 requires a wider exhaust system. Also the system was 5/8" too nerrow to fit the jig at the repair station. After the system was repaired the system fit the engine. I,m sorry, I was not trying to start a controversy, my only intention was to let the members know about a vendors problem with their exhaust system.

Rex you are not causing a controversy as this has been talked about before univairs QC sucks and costs twice the price.Try buying Stinson parts from them that will scare you half to death.

It is also possible that it could be your cylinders... do you have Continental or Superior?

                        Re: New Exhaust System

I have the continental cylinders. The exhaust system would not fit the jig for a continental 65 hp engine. they also found that the system was off by the same 5/8" from side to side.

Ok, so in keeping with answering rather than creating questions, if a guy wants to buy a new exhaust, one consistent with the O&M configuration, and has no original of anything to use as a pattern, what's the best course?

Personally, I did like Chuck...went with a Luscombe style exhaust. If you want an original style system, I'd contact Dawley, or one of the other well known outfits like that. I've always been pleased with their stuff.
