BC12D Stringers (May 46)

Hi all
Thinking ahead and looking for some info on stringers.

My BC12D had 4 wooded stringers, two top and two bottom, and I have 4 aluminium stringers, two about 4' and two about 8' in length.

Looking at the door/window frames, there is evidence that there was once 3 stringers on each side. I think I'm missing two side stringers.

I believe the 8+ foot stringers go in the centre. I suspect the < 4' stringers attache to the trailing edge of the window frames. So I think I'm missing two that attach to the door frame at the door sill location.

Can anyone confirm this?

Also the length of these lower side stringers? (may become obvious during assembly but...)

I think you are exactly right. In the enclosed photo of mine (April 1946), you can see two side stringers fitted, and the lower one yet to be fitted but you can see the welded tab on the lower diagonal where it will go. I can't confirm the lengths until tomorrow, and there's no guarantee that mine are "original" lengths.



For clarity, all my stringers are white aluminium box-sections (probably from old insect screen doors) but perfectly adequate, and they were fitted when the aeroplane came to me.

The shortest stringer on the sides of the fuselage goes in the middle:

I did a lot of investigation into the stringer configuration. I shamelessly copied many of Bob Lee's rebuilding ideas, however my BC12D did not have the tabs for the stringers like Bob's. I went with the metal ones that you can buy from Aircraft Spruce held on with springs. This is what was used on the T-crafts built in the 19'80's. It worked well and I would do it again. I used two short and one long on the sides, two on the top and one long on the belly. I have seen so many different methods and they all seem to work.
