  • Wing strut shipping help

I know that we're all tired of the wing strut issue, AD 2008-04-09. I have a set of never used struts, I can't call them new because the set was purchased in May 1978 from Taylorcraft Aviation Corp. These struts were in the original shipping tubes and not opened until last year. The cost of these struts was $140 ea for the front and $130 ea for the rear, shipping was $20. in 1978. Now I need to deal with the AD. I decided to go with Wag Aero for inspection lube and seal, so that I don't have to deal with this issue again. Bridget at WagAero is the strut contact person that gave me all the information needed to get the job done. The thing that got under my skin the most was the cost of shipping. My cost to ship from Connecticut was over $190 each way using R&L freight. If you have a shipping account with with shippers the cost is considerably lower. I called Bridget and asked if they would allow me to ship using their account number; she said sure and gave me the WagAero shipping number. The cost using the WagAero number is about 80% cheaper. If you want to ship your struts using their number, give her a call. She said would happy to help you out.

When you have them shipped insist that you know that the company shipping them will cover damage as a result of shipping. I had a pair shipped from Wag Aero a couple of years ago, and asked Dawn to make sure the company would have insurance. She told me they did, When I got them the container had been run over by a fork truck and one strut was unusable. It took me months to settle and the shipping company never did pay for them, there claim being they were not a new product and would only pay damage for the used scap value, Apparently Trucking companies can be very devious when dealing with freight damage, Finally after a couple of months Wag Aero finally replaced it with a used sealed strut which they made for me at no charge. But It was a nightmare.

          Good tip Norm thanks!

It also makes one wonder about the markup in shipping costs.

Wow that is a deep discount. If I marked my work up by over 5x costs I would be wealthy! or not have any business :-(

            Re: Wing strut shipping help

Not to change subject, but I have a set of Factory Struts from Harry some of the last he did, and they don't fit my airplane, My a/c has a strut angle of 6 degrees and these are cut at -0- this is the top attach point front strut

So they are useless to me, anyone that might be able to use them I'll make a real deal.

Acording to Alaska Airframes these struts can be from -0- to 9 degrees depending on the airplane. One really needs to have them made custom for the plane to be used on
