  • More Storm Damage, URRRGGG!!!

Well, more severe storms trained across central and easter Kentucky tonight...tornados, straight line winds, dime to baseball sized hail from Louisville to Pikeville..... They were almost all lined up perfectly one right after another following the same track all evening one right after another and guess what, West Liberty was right in the middle of every single one. 5 severe storms in one night! Each containing damaging winds(mostly straight line and gust fronts in west liberty). The last two storms had 1-3 inch size hail average....some select pieces were larger!
I have hail damage to my house(metal roof dented all to hell and one set of French doors got cracked glass), two cars damaged(one lost the back glass).
Then went to the airport a few minutes ago to see what Was left there.... lost my hangars doors, holes in the the sky lights, and three airplanes damaged from hail, one probabaly totaled...still flyable but will be nearly impossible to make any money on them now, and im not sure it will be worth turning them into insurance because after the tornado in 2012 I'm not sure anyone will even sell me insurance again if i make another claim now.....and even if they would i probably wouldn't ever be able to afford it.
It just hasn't been my year. One step forward and two back. Lol. Oh well, got thru it before, I'll do it again, but i must say it's really getting old. I'm getting really sick & tired of it and beginning to wonder if it's even worth it.

Sorry to hear it, I feel your pain. I have a 182RG that was crushed by a hangar collapsing under snow load and just this summer a project Tri-Pacer my IA/AP was working on burned up in a hangar fire, no insurance on either.

Ouch! That really is a hard hit Randy. Sorry about that. I have insurance on everything except the damage to the hangar. I have insurance that covers the contents in the hangar but none on the actual structure. I just know if I turn in a claim on the airplanes that I will be out of business for the next 3-5 years or so because no one will insure me at a price I will be able to afford. If I decide to file it this will make 3 storm damage claims in 2 1/2 years!

        Thanks John....yes, it's been a doozy!

Ever think West Liberty isn't an airplane friendly place? Not the people, the weather! I thought SE Virginia was supposed to be the bad place for hurricanes but we haven't seen anything in decades.
Maybe we need to do a barn (hangar) raising and put you up one of those airplane bunkers that storms roll over.

Very true hank on all comments. I seriously thought about building a bunker type hangar if I can ever get far enough ahead to have the money and time.

Why not have a word with the insurers to see if they understand the risks adequately? Perhaps they'll cough up the capital to build such a bunker say over a ten-year insurance deal with other aeroplane owners?
