  • Fuel Delivery in a '41 Deluxe

On my '41 Deluxe (N29780), fuel leaves the fuel tank via a brass 90 degree elbow. It goes through the Imperial fuel valve, and passes through the bulkhead via a brass 45 degree elbow. It does not utilize the more common AN833 elbow. Is this a common setup?

I think the original set up the flex line screwed right into the fuel valve and went through the firewall. Back then they would have used a standard automotive style line.

I run a rigid stainless line from the valve to the gascolator, then from the gascolator to the carb is a flex line. Since AN fittings are pretty common, that makes it easy to do and the stainless line lessens the chance of fire. Tim

Do you want me to brind down a piece of tubing? I have some #6 rigid stainless which you can use to make a new line. Tim

Yes, please. I never made a rigid fuel line. Guess there's always a first time!

Peter, Sorry I got this message after I left. I have plenty of tubing that I can mail you. I would only put on hose between the gascolator and the engine. Did you get your fuel flow checked yet?

I have the Imperial bender and flaring tool, just something to add to your tool collection.

Fuel flow checked good. Installation went well, except now I have a leak from the bottom of the fuel tank! I don't think Rectorseal5 is up for the job. Going to give it a week. If it still drips (weeps), I'm thinking about using Permatex Aviation Sealant. Will let you know how it goes.
Skip has the ROLO-FLAIR FLARING TOOL 37° referenced above. Once I solve the leaking fuel tank issue, I think I'll go with a hard line as you suggest. Nice meeting you Saturday. I hope your drive back went well.

Dont bother with the sealant, just pull the tank and do it right. The shut off valve really stresses the tank when you push pull the control rod and the bottom of the tank and is most likely cracked along the seam where the bung is. A good radiator shop can solder/weld it. If its steel, its a metal called tern plate and can easliy be soldered. Tim
