We can get you new safety cables or the drawing for them. My plane had cables that were about 1/4 the diameter called for! Maybe we need to do mass buys more often than every 4 years?!?!? How many out there plan to change their bungees in the next year?
Thanks for the info. I called him and he told me I would be better off to buy from Aircraft Spruce or another supplier because of the quantity thing. He has to get about $29 each if you order only four. I ordered four from Aircraft Spruce at $21.75.
The best tool to buy, $150 includes priority shipping to all 50 States.

I know there are a lot of threads on the bungees, but I can't find anything about when to replace them. If my logbook is accurate, my bungees are 20 years and 475 flight hours old. They protrude a little when resting on the ground empty, but it doesn't seem to be excessive.
I've done mine twice in 10 years, the first set were relatively old and airplane was sagging on the ground expecially after a
firm 3 point landing, so I replaced with some regular duty ones and they lasted about 5 years and thing started sagging again showing the bungees while the covers were extended about 1.5 inches or more, next time I put in the heavy duty ones from A/C Spruce, it is stiff but solid as a rock been 5 years ago now. It it breaks and the cable isn't riged right its going to ruin your whole day, 20 years is amazing, My two bits would be "REPLACE THEM" ASAP
Dave, thanks for the info. A friend who just sold a Taylorcraft said he still has a tool he made and I can use it. I want to be cautious, and make sure if his really works well before I go that route, but if it does work I'll probably use it.

Post a photo of the tool. The guys here have used every one imaginable and you will get feedback on the tool. It might be a copy of Drude's, one of Drude's, an old factory type or the wrong one all together, but you will know what you are using.
Some of the old ones are "OK" if used with a few tricks. Some are "man killers" and should be cut up with a torch. Best to know what you have before you use it (or DON'T use it!)

I change bungees when inspection shows they need replacing. (weak, fraying, etc) We will be changing a set at the next annual on our T. I use two of the 9010s with an old one on top of that. Tried just the two per side and the gear was too mushy. Maybe because it has the O-200 and a metal prop on it? I just get them at Spruce as we can drive over and pick them up in person.
As far as how long they last, I think there are a lot of variables. How the plane is stored certainly plays into it. To me it's sort of like saying how often should you change your tires? On tires, I usually use a mostly worn out set of tires from a larger plane and they'll last until they crack from old age. Landing on grass a lot makes the difference here, we rarely wear a tire's tread out.

Is this drawing for pre war or post war? I seem to remember that there is a difference.
I saw somewhere on this site recently the color code for bungee cords. Can someone tell me where I saw it, or another link? I just bought a set of 9010HD's and the are yellow-yellow-blue.
