  • When to replace bungee cords?

I know there are a lot of threads on the bungees, but I can't find anything about when to replace them. If my logbook is accurate, my bungees are 20 years and 475 flight hours old. They protrude a little when resting on the ground empty, but it doesn't seem to be excessive.

If they protrude below the belly then they are on their way out.

Replace them, check the snare cables and bumpers when you do.

Don't believe everything that you don't see in the logs.

Gerald we did order a large amount but sadly there all sold to get the freshest call David at SBC Industries and tell him what you want . The 1946 bc12d uses a 9010HD and the pre war use a 9090 as you dont have your plane listed i cant tell what number you need. The phone number for SBC is 256 259 6609 they are in Scottsboro Al.Also drude makes the best tool for the install good luck and a tip if you heve access to a engine crane pick up your plane with a sling around the engine mount and just cut the old ones also make sure the safty cables are in good shape and put them in the middle of the two bungees.

We can get you new safety cables or the drawing for them. My plane had cables that were about 1/4 the diameter called for! Maybe we need to do mass buys more often than every 4 years?!?!? How many out there plan to change their bungees in the next year?

For Gerald's (and other's) reference, here is the link to Hank's Bulk order of bungees: Link, it's 12 pages

I do see that there has been new input on page 12, in the last day or two, which suggests that there may be a market for a new batch.

Hank, if you are watching, I think it may be appropriate to start a new thread on a new batch of bungees 2014 or 2015 or whenever. If you are in agreement, I'll consolidate these various new threads & posts into a completely new thread, and close the original one with a link to the new.

              Your thoughts?

Probably a good idea to find out how many want them. I can't imagine as many as the first load. We were hoping to get everyone on a 4 or 5 year schedule to make it better for the manufacturer.

I already replied to the new bungee thread, but cables are on my list of replacement items.
                    Cheers,

The tool that I sell is the best tool for replacing them.

Postage and tool cost is $150 delivered to US addresses.

                      Dave

p.s. my address is in the technical resources section by the tool.

Mine is a 1946 BC12D. So I assume I need the 9010HD? It looks like only one per side.

Re: When to replace bungee cords?

Two per side. And, if I remember correctly, the general consensus is replacement every 4 to 5 years. Weather, exhaust, oil, etc. can hasten the demise. The sagging is indicative of needing replacement.

I am sure others may add to this.
                          Cheers,

Re: When to replace bungee cords?

I wanted to say a collective thanks to all of you who responded to my questions about the bungee cords. In my opinion this forum is a model for any aircraft forum. I'm amazed at the knowledge and helpful attitudes of all of you. I now know what bungees to buy, how often they should be replaced, and suggestions of the methods and tool to use for the installation. I have owned N95522 ('46 BC12D) for only a year and a half didn't know anything about T'crafts before. I built a Van's RV-6A and flew it for 14 years before selling it almost two years ago before I bought the T'craft. The RV is a good traveling machine, but the mission changed, I had been everywhere I wanted to go, and the LSA appeal was there too, of course.

What should be diameter be? I'll check when I replace the bungees.
