  • Engine Popping on final

    Good afternoon Tribe,

46 BC12D very low time 65 engine (150 hours +/-) has started popping when pulled to idle in flight (like descending on final). Totally stock, no aftermarket parts. She starts SOOOO super easy, runs like a top, fuel burn hasn't changed, exhaust residue is same, I scare the spiders away from the wings with decalin every fill up and everything seems fine. Just started doing this on the last few flights.
My first thought is an exhaust leak..? Only thing I thought after that is maybe just too rich at idle (idle circuit in these carbs?)..??
Location is Monterey area, on "normal" days, so were not talking high altitude or hot days...
I'll get some pics posted of the exhaust.

So if you see a T-Hog making a strafing run ... that's me
(just exaggerating - it's not that bad)
but I'd rather people pointing at my flawless slip to landing and not my airplane farting all the way down final.

    Thanks Ladies, Lad's and Gent's

slight exhaust leak, its sucking o2 in and then lights off when another cylider starts the combustion process in the exhaust pipe. No blows gaskets are nortiourous for it. Tim

Bingo on the exhaust leak. Might check the system for cracks.

Could also be the beginning of an intake rubber cracking out.

Wish I would've read this thread before my first solo. At least it was exciting. Just not how I had hoped.
