  • Non electrical Starter &Battery?

Any one know if one were to use Terry's non electrical 85hp STC and then put on a starter and battery with no Alternator /Generator would it be legal ? I have a buddy that did this on a champ and he swears he is legal......

Lots of Pitts pilots do this too. Enough battery for 10 starts, then take the battery home to recharge.

Yes with the newer lightweight skytec starters and an odesey (sp) battery on can get a lot of starting before needing to hook up to a smart charger. The think I am wrestling with is if it is legal. It should be if there is no electrical system..

And add in a solar panel to trickle charge the battery... there's plenty of room underneath the windshield.

I think the rules said it was required IF there was an ENGINE driven electrical system. My wind generator puts my planes in the no electrical system category according to the FAA. I would think a ground charger or a solar panel would be the same.

I interpreted the question to ask if adding a starter and battery takes the 85hp installation out of compliance with the STC.????

the STC offers the option of going with or without a starter and electrical system. I suggest you write to Terry Bowden directly and explain to him what you want to do.

                Re: Non electrical Starter &Battery?

Mike , That was exactly the question. I know one can get the full electrical system as mentioned on the post below yours and directly above this one from Pearson (which the author had no way of knowing I am aware of that so thank you Pearson for your answer). I do not want that particular STC IF I can avoid it. That means converting to an F-19 which not only takes it out of the light sport category ,but also is a very extensive intrusion involving changes that need to be made some of which personally I do not like. Now what may be a question I need to ask regarding Terry's STC non electric C-85 STC is DOES IT REQUIRE A C85-8 OR CAN ONE USE A C85-12? After that is answered and IF one can use the -12 THEN and only until then we are now out beyond Terry's STC with my question of then installing a starter and battery but no Alternator hence no electrical system. Just as an aside there were many of our planes delivered with a battery and either with or without a wind driven generator. Man now I remember why I went to experimental. This gets goofy quick !

Hank I just read up and saw your post. Sorry to have missed it earlier before I responded above. I want to agree with your point about " engine driven charging system" and specifically the absence there of keeping me legal. I do need to see what Terry's wording says on the STC about whether one can use the C85-12.

I wondered if there was more information about this starter addition.

If there is an C85 -12 can a sky-tec starter be added easily?
What would one budget for this ?

Terry Bowden answered me. He holds the cards on the STC(s) You need to contact him first and give him the aircraft sn you have , engine you have or intend on and what you want to do. Personally I like the idea of the short engine mount non electric version with a C-85. Having a C85 -12 with a lightweight starter and simply a battery... no alt/Gen would in my opinion be the ideal Taylorcraft. He has the Old Gilberti STC which provides for a non electric 85 upgrade. I envision this is the one he would sell you as the basis for what I am describing. Adding the starter and battery would require him to do a bit more paper work . It is not unrealistic at all. Remember the lighter you keep it the better it will fly. This is especially true on Taylorcrafts

For what it's worth, I did basically what Jim describes above. I have a '46 BC-12 and a C85-12. So I called Terry and got the STC with a special deviation to allow the -12.

I have a short mount. But no starter/battery.

Yes the deviation to what you describe is the addition of a battery and a starter for my inclusion. The skyteck starters are light and efficient. I have a Buddy with a Champ that did this . He gets a lot of starts before charge is needed.

If many Pitts, etc. are flying this way, would they do it illegally? I really doubt it.

I think the legality he's concerned with is having a battery/no generator installation being a legal equipment configuration, i.e. per the TCDS. The STC deviation would resolve that for sure. The certified Pitts may have addressed that by the factory and, of course, the experimental Pitts can do whatever they want. Another benefit of not having an engine driven generator is not being forced to install a transponder or ADSB.
