  • I have luscombe tech question.

I know, i know, this is a taylorcraft forum but i know some of us play with more then just taylorcrafts.

I have a 1946 luscombe 8A that I'm trying to get ready to resell and it has a very badly worn rudder control horn(VERY worn!). In the holes where the control cables attach to the horn are worn almost completely thru to the outside edge of the horn and Im losing 1/3 or more of my rudder travel because of it. I'm not brave or foolish enough to fly it like this(even thou I did do one test flight when I took the airplane on trade) because one good gust could cause me complete rudder control failure.

My question is, can I replace the old straight control horn from the round tip rudder with that from a newer model square tip that has the angle on it? The new style horn can be ordered from almost anyone but the original straight horn has to come from the luscombe folks who are proving very hard to get in touch with after a month of trying.

I did manage to get one call back from the luscombe guys last week and the guy I talked to was new and told me that he thought there was a mod kit for the old horn to fix that problem and he thought the new style horn would also replace the old straight style but he wasn't 100% sure and would call me back and let me know......that was last week and now I can't get a return call or anyone to answer when I call. So I just thought that maybe one of y'all could answer it for me. Thanks.

    Kevin,

There is a guy in the UK very experienced in overhauling / restoring Luscombes, his name is Pete Bush.

He can be contacted via the European Luscombes website here: http://www.europeanluscombes.org.uk/community/index.php

He is very knowledgeable, I'll try to get him to contact you.

Thanks guys. That's a big help. And within the last hour I finally got a call back from doug with the luscombe endowment or something like that. Nice guy but seems like a very busy guy too. He answered all my questions and advised me to go with the later model horn. Less money, more available, and works better with most tailwheels. Said he would have one to me by the first of the week
