Re: Re Build of N94978 BC12-d
Lee,
Before I put my new door panels on I cut to fit and adhered roofing paper, basically similar stuff just not as thick as original. You could also do the same to the inside of the boot cowl area, mine also had the heavy paper there. It is a loud airplane, anr headsets are wonderful.

Re: Re Build of N94978 BC12-d
The deadening from the "tar paper" is from the mass. It makes the sheet metal heavier so it doesn't vibrate synchronized with other things like the engine. It is like a big drum head and the "Tar paper" is like laying a book on top of the drum. Lighter things will not change the natural frequency of the sheet metal. You might be bale to drive the frequency higher than the engine by putting a cord from the skin to something in the door to dampen the vibrations. It would be fun to experiment with.

Re Build of N94978 BC12-d
In process of rebuilding doors. i have installed new plexiglass sliders that work well thanks to all of the posts on this discussion group. Any thoughts re some sound proofing in the door panels. Originally doors had a piece of "tar paper" about 3" X 12" glued to inside of door. Is there a lite weight material that I could use that would lower the decibels and/ or keep the doors from vibrating? I flew this plane in the early '50s .......no fancy headsets or intercoms. We just yelled at each other to be heard. Is my idea of some soundproofing just an exercise in futility?Tags: None
