Expired airworthiness certificates

My mechanic (IA) told me that he was told by the district FSDO that airworthiness certificates issued before July of 1957 were no longer valid. Can this be right? If so, do I have go through an entire re-inspection process to get a valid airworthiness certificate?

That would be correct. You will have to hire a DAR, or get someone from the FAA to do a conformity inspection to make sure the airplane conforms to the type certificate.

Please explain this a little more , when and how did this happen My Type certificate states,7-7-56, It has had its annual done every year since then, by numerous A&Ps how could this be?

It happened to everybody. The regulations were changed. Prior to the change in 1957 the Airworthiness Certificate was re-issued yearly in conjunction with the annual inspection. It was changed to become a permanent document. Most airplanes got the permanent Airworthiness Certificate issued right away. Apparently yours did not and has been overlooked on any subsequent annual. One of my L-2 projects doesn't have one either. If and when I restore it (it's the .5 of my 3.5 L-2's) I will have to apply for an AW Cert. too.

It's not a huge deal. Contact you IA and have him call the feds. If they can't get someone there, they'll send you to a DAR. The IA does an annual, the fed/DAR does a small inspection to make sure it's all in the proper form and you'll have a permanent airworthiness certificate. The annual shouldn't be any different than any annual the IA does if they're doing their job. I've gone through this many times with old aircraft and importing aircraft. Don't make it out to be more complicated than it is.

That works fine if it has already had a permanent airworthiness certificate issued in the past. If it hasn't had a permanent airworthiness issued before, they should be doing the inspection.

c. Exchange. It is highly desirable that all aircraft currently certificated in the standard
category carry FAA Form 8100-2 to be consistent with the regulations. Owners and operators of
general aviation and air carrier aircraft that still have FAA Form 1362A, Certificate of
Airworthiness, should be encouraged to exchange such forms for the standard airworthiness
certificate, FAA Form 8100-2. In exchanging these certificates, the operating certificate number
will NOT be entered on the revised form. FAA Form 1362A will be attached to and forwarded
with a copy of the revised certificate to AFS-750 to establish an official record of the exchange
action. The foregoing exchange procedure also applies to FAA Form 8130-7, in lieu of
FAA Form 1362B, Certificate of Airworthiness. The new airworthiness certificate will reflect
the date as indicated on FAA Forms 1362A or 1362B, preceded by a capital “E” in the Date
block of the certificate. The procedure to exchange a C of A (ACA-1362 (12-50)) does not apply
to an expired C of A issued before July 17, 1956. Block 4 of FAA Form 1362 indicates the date
of expiration. See the procedures in chapter 3 of this order for a standard airworthiness
certificate.

Your IA should review your airworthiness certificate at each annual to determine it is a valid certificate.

Perhaps my C of A is valid since it falls prior to 7-17-1956, It is a very legalistic document and hard to decifer.

Go to this website, select N number search, enter your N number in the box, search.....

Look in the third section down, Airworthiness. The bottom right is the date of the current Airworthiness cert. Next to A/W date box. If there is no date, then the A/W cert is probably not valid.

Thanks I will be studying it closely when I get a chance. It is in my hanger I just hope with all of the annuals done over the years this is not an issue.

I don't see a Taylorcraft registered in iowa county.
