    Re: Engine upgrade

    Mike,

The TCDS state that the 85hp is approved for serial numbers 12000 and up. I assume that those airplanes came from the factory with the modifications that have been discussed (spar bushings, revised fuel venting, larger fuel lines, etc).

      Re: Engine upgrade

Eric, I have one from 01-19-48 for installing a C85-12 on mine, and there should be another on the fische from 07-29-54 when they pulled another 65 and put a C85-12 on again. You're more than welcome to pull it up on your fische and use it if you want.

        Re: Engine upgrade

Why are you wanting to use an STC for an engine option on the Type Cert? It is a LOGBOOK entry to install a C-85 on the same type cert as aircraft with an A-65 as long as the associated requirements are met! You can also do a FIELD APPROVAL using CAM 18 as your data since they were cert. under the CAR's.

You are correct about a logbook entry IF the aircraft s/n is above 12000 per TCDS. If the s/n is less than 12000 the airframe would need all the upgrades that were applied to the later s/n airplanes. In my opinion that would be a major alteration unless the factory supplied an upgrade kit. The TCDS are very vague on the required modifications so some sort of approved data would be necessary to upgrade the airframe, and unless Forrest has the documentation on the rework I doubt it could be obtained (from the now closed factory).
As was stated earlier the easiest way to obtain approval for the upgrade would be to use a 337 from an aircraft that was updated before 10-01-1955. 337's before 10-01-1955 can be used for approved data per FAA Order 8300.10 vol 2.
Barnstmr is a DER and Acroeric is known to have ties with the FAA. I'm sure they can set us all straight on these matters.

                    LSA as Approved Data

The Taylor Sport will not work for approved data because LSA aircraft do not operate under a Type Certificate. All LSA are built to conform to an ASTM standard; the LSA is not certificated under FAR Part 21. The FAA does not consider an F-19 and a Taylor Sport to be related, even though they are 90% identical. The primary differences are the Taylor Sport has hydraulic toe brakes and no fuselage header fuel tank.

This is an interesting issue with factory built LSA aircraft that are manufactured in accordance with the ASTM standard. There is no equivalent to the 337 for an LSA, which means they can only be modified with the factory's approval. The factory is not really interested in making changes as they are legally liable. A change could be something as simple as a radio swap. This applies to the Taylor Sport as well as the Cessna 162.

                        Re: Engine upgrade

What pisses me off is the fact everyone says the best engine for the BC12D is the 0-200. I have two of them and want to put one in mine. Seems it can't be done... ? I've heard about all the 85s tuned to 100s and such but does anyone know about an actual 0-200A put into a BC12D ?

well i remember seeing on dons dream machines that he has the stc to use o-200 case halfs so if you were to get this and the c-85 to o-200 stc u should be good to go

                            Re: Engine upgrade

There is a 337 listed on the tech info on the taylorcraft web for an O-200, and the Gilberti STC has one approved to convert to the model 19 if I remember correctly. Tim

Kevin,I dug my STC's out and my engine swap is dated 5/23/60 and has no list of alterations to airframe. Its numbered SA4-1135,this data is on file in the Enginnering & Manufacturing Branch,FAA,Region IV,
                              Los Angeles,Ca.
I belive a number of BC-12D's have been registered under this document.
                              got anything on this?
