      Re: Taylorcraft bubble face compass

I know from photos they WERE used on the 41 Deluxe and were an option in 41 ( the compass was NOT standard equipment before the war). I have non- Deluxe photos with a compass in a housing on top of the glare shield but don't know when they used it above the windshield and when on the glare shield. My 45 has the windshield mount for the big compass, but it was made using a pre-war fuselage so it might not be the norm. From what I can find about my 45 it did have the big compass. Josh's 40 DID NOT have the windshield compass originally according to the paperwork. I think it had the one on top of the glare shield.
Wish I had more than 3 data points. Also would like any photos of the glare shield ones with the metal cover for when we redo Josh's plane.

Forget where I picked this up.... Had it overhauled by Keystone. Has the Taylorcraft logo on one side of the plate, and the Airpath logo on the reverse... Made a brass screwdriver out of some brazing rod, opened it up, and no screws???? Just a piece of wood with a hole on each side. Supposedly the trick is to magnetize two small nails and slide one into each hole just enough to zero the compass. The instrument guy said it was one of the old ones;-)

Firstly, Marty, I apologise unreservedly for any offence, which was not intended.

The problem with email / Forum messaging is that much of the communication tools we humans use (tone of voice, facial expressions, hand gestures etc) is lost.

I am still not sure what was intended, however, I have the greatest respect for you, your knowledge and your offer to help anyone, anytime.

Bird, I would give them a friendly call and ask about the progress. That has worked for me in the past. h

                  Re: Taylorcraft bubble face compass

I sent my bubble faced compass to Keystone in January. It was just over three weeks including ground shipping to get it back. I am extremely happy with the work they did and were obviously very prompt in my case. I felt the cost for overhaul was fair.

                    Rob,
It takes a big man to apoligize sometimes for something they may have mis-spoken(maybe that's why my ass is getting so big, lol). However I do commend you for doing so as I felt that you would.......

But on a more humorous note, I'm just as happy as a fat tick on a lazy dogs butt that it was someone other then me this time Truly glad to see you two at ease with each other.

                      Greg,
That's a beautiful compass. Let me know if it ever starts to cause a blind spot in your field of view and I'll happily offer it a new home, lol.

                          Terry,
I don't think Aero Bulletin 7a required them (compass) on light airplanes unless they were being used for hire, but they were an option.
The '36 aA model I bought from Chet Peek had one in it. The A model I have now has on in it. I recently bought a basket case '41 Deluxe and it has one as well.

On the 41 Deluxe it was part of the package, not an option. I understand on all the other versions before the war it was a extra cost option.

I will keep you in mind. However, I don't think its going to be that much of a problem?

I find it humorous and ironic that this thread is about a compass. Sometime we all need some direction in our lives. Misunderstandings happen all too often with communications with technology.
