  • Elevator Trim Tab Removal

Ok, so I have pulled my tail feathers for recovering. Stabilizers were a lot of fun to get off, but finally got'em.

But now I am challenged by how to remove the 46 BC12-D style trim tab.

What am I missing here. Do I have to remove the rivets and unfold it?

Rivets? My 46 trim tab is attached with screws.

    Can you post photos?

      Re: Elevator Trim Tab Removal

There are several types of pitch trim systems and tabs used on different Taylorcrafts. Unfortunately a lot of times an elevator may be switched between planes for repairs and they are pretty well mixed up. As Robert said, if you post a photo we can help you with how to take care of yours. They all work about the same and are all pretty good except the "flipper" type that was on the side of the fuselage under the stab and not on the elevator. Those weren't really 'terrible" but were undersized for the job. I doubt you have one since everyone who does have them knows about them and you can recognize those guys by their enormous biceps.

All kidding aside, a photo will make this really easy. ;-)

There is a 1/8" rod that is inserted through the hinges. It is in the inboard end of the trim tab. Pull it out.

Rob, I think the rivets are along the aft edge of the tab.

Saw the rod, removed the "Pin" holding it in place inward of the trim tab through the elevator "frame" (excuse the lack of terminology knowledge), but it didn't want to come out. I was only moderately coercive since I wasn't sure
exactly what I was dealing with.

Below are a couple of pics. Couldn't get exactly what we are after because I dropped everything off to the soda blaster earlier today.

You can get a good glimpse at one of the three spots that will need corrosion repair as well.
