Flightline FL-760 Radio

Does anyone have any experience with the Flightline FL-760 transceiver sold by Aircraft Spruce? It is not TSO'd but I was thinking that it could be installed in the glove box with Velcro. I figure it would be better than the handheld we are now using. Since there is no generator I feel that this radio would not draw much current from the battery pack we are using. It has other advantages as well such as an intercom, etc...
The ICOM would be nice but not certain how long the battery would last... Any suggestions would be most appreciated...

there is a 337 for i think the microair but for a cert taylorcraft it really needs to be tsoed

I had a Microair in my L-2 off of a battery that worked well, no problems on longevity. Then again, My handheld Icom A-6 has worked great, too. I just carry an extra battery pack just in case, but have never needed it.

I have one. No complaints including the intercom which mutes when another AC transmits. Only complaint is the instructions. I purchased after learning about it from an ag operator who claimed comm. was improved over the King Radios. I have had no complaints about the quality of my transmissions from other pilots or ATC.

No it does not for just a com radio. I did the Microair 337, that radio is not TSO'd but it does meet an FCC spec and has australian approval so that was sufficient to install. Tim

I used a Yaesu with an extra battery pack. Could put a small gel-cell batt in the baggage and hook it up as well. Dave

I have been using a FL-760 for over 2 years. Don't use the intercom, so cannot comment on its quality. Mine is mounted in an aluminum box I built with a gel cell battery used in the RC model hobby. I only use the radio leaving or returning to the airport (or at other landing areas). I usually turn it off during much of the flight, so battery charge lasts months.

Use the 337 for the microair, follow its instructions and just substitute the 760 radio. Tim

Tim.. Are you saying a com radio does not have to be TSOed if it meets FCC specs?

YES, that is correct. The microair is NOT tso's when I did the 337 and I was able to get it approved because of the Bilateral agreement with the FAA and Australia. It meets FCC spec though and that was good enough for a taylorcraft without an electrical system. Tim

My biggest beef with the FL-760 is that the internal intercom has a three-setting digital squelch. This is mostly inadequate for the noise of a T-craft cockpit and also makes mis-matched headsets sort of a crap shoot.

I dislike that the intercom cuts off when another plane transmits. It makes teaching in the traffic pattern very difficult. You can learn to live with it, but an external intercom is a plus. The radio itself is fine.
