  • Nuts and Bolts List

Did a search and found a reference last year about a list of necessary hardware to use all new nuts and bolts in a rebuild. Am about to sit down with the drawings a try to make a list, or as close as I can get, so I can just move along with the project. Anybody know of such a list, or is it just a fantasy of mine? Restoring N43402, a 46 BC12D. Moving along pretty good, with a lot of help from local buddies. We have a shortage of on hand nuts and bolts, but do want to replace it all.

Why? Only replace what is necessary. If you convert to ball bearing pulleys, lengths may change, if your trim is slightly different than original, it will change, etc. Tim

For what it's worth, when I started the restoration on my '46 a couple of years ago, I decided to adopt a policy of only putting new hardware back on the airplane. I've made a few exceptions. And I'm no A&P or TCraft expert, but for me, it just feels "right" to not be putting any old hardware back on the airplane.

Also, Gary contacted me and I emailed him my list of hardware.

I have to second Tim's philosophy. I am doing a full rebuild of the wings on my BC12D (n34237, sn 7700). It has new spars, new cables, and all new nuts and bolts. I am re-using the drag/antidrag wires, the aileron fittings, and all the ribs, but I am even making new root fittings due to a seeming butcher job back in 1973 when the Gilbarti/Harrer STC was applied.

Like Tim said, it just feels "right" to make everything as new as possible.

          Hi Skip,

          Forums are funny sometimes.

Both philosophies are touted by a guy named Tim.

          lol

          Astjp2 is Tim also.

I find it ironic that many guys will spend hundreds of dollars replacing hardware but wont do the 500 hour service on their mags....spend the money where it counts the most, putting new bolts in every location but not overhauling your accessories when you do an engine overhaul is just not right from what I have been taught. Don't get me wrong, I did the same thing, but now I replace what is necessary so I will have fund left for other needs. Tim

I agree, if, and I am, I'm spending the time and effort to do a ground up restoration certainly new hardware is in order. It is only a small part of the overall cost. I have long thought some sort of reference material including an IPC for our planes would be extremely handy.

                David,

Just curious, what is an "IPC"?
