Today I carried out the 20 hour Inspection check on the exhaust muffs on my F22A ( nose wheel ) It is a bit of a pain having to remove and refit the engine covers for what on paper is a minor inspection but on two previous inspections I found cracked exhaust tubes in the area of the welds.
The 20 hour check is listed in the POH and also on a plate attached to each exhaust muff, it also allows a visual check for any other engine problems. The exhaust muff inspection is required to make sure the Carb heat system is working correctly and also to avoid exhaust fumes entering the cabin via the heater system.
In other words an important inspection but it begs the question why support brackets were not fitted to the exhaust stacks which I am sure would help prevent these problems? I should add that my aircraft has the Lycoming 0235 112hp engine.
Is this inspection and potential exhaust stack problems confined to the nose wheel F22A or is it required on the older Taylorcraft models fitted with the Continental engines as well?
