  • Reporting emergency off field landings to the FAA

I stopped by KSHD a few weeks ago talk to my avioncs technician for upgrades in my Bonanza. During our discussions, he mentioned that a customer was flying his Bonanza in for new radios a few days before but had to make an emergency landing in a farmers field due to running out of gas. He also shared with me that the Bonanza pilot later found he had gas but failed to make the proper tank selection. I asked what the findings were from the FAA and was told they were not contacted since there was no property damage and that the Bonanza had been disassembled and trailered back to the owners home field. I then shared with him my off field landing in my TCraft (refer to my off field landing in "gear stop cables" in this forum) and the hassel with the the FAA and he said I did not have to call them since I had caused no damage to property owner. In my case I had four meetings with the FAA from December through February this year with a final conclusion that there were no infractions and the case was closed. This was the second A&P mechanic that told me that the FAA did not have to be contacted unless there was property damage. I thought I would pass this along to others to prevent unwarrented involvement with the FAA if, indeed they do not need to be notified. Would sincerely appreciate any comments on this matter.

    regards to all,

Look up NTSB 830... that tells you what the definitions are and what constitutes what must be reported.

        Ryan/ L. Fries

Thank you both for the information provided.
I have reviewed NTSB 830 and found it very informative and will pass this along to other aviaiton friends I come in contact with... Knowing what is required can prevent unnecessary "hassels".

        sincerely,

Don't make the call unless someone is hurt. Even then I would not call on someone elses airplane....
