  • Wing weights

Anyone have a measurement on how much a wing weighs, for storage purposes. (Hanging from a rafter.)

I've seen the number 80 lb uncovered before. L2 is supposed to be heavier than a B. What do you have?

        Eric & Dave,

Thanks, much lighter then I expected.
        It's a BC12D, tanks in both wings.

Hmmm...sounds heavy, thought when I weighed mine they were 78 or so covered.
Mind you my user name is...:-(

You could be correct regarding your question.

My dilemna is that I weighed them in 1998 and cannot find my notes

I recall that the uncovered with was about 70 lbs and covered was about 75 (possibly 77) lbs but since I can't find my notes I am safe saying 70-75 empty.

Also having the aileron on or will effect the answer. I think I had mine off.

Dave (also not 25 anymore! )

              Re: Wing weights

I have the rather dubious honour of recovering an Auster J1/U (don't ask, I don't know what that designation means).

The wings with the steel fuel tanks & tank covers removed, and all fabric off, weigh 200lb each. Just look at that pitot head! The W-bracing you can see within the tank bay is 1/4" steel.

It is one of the most over-engineered aircraft in the world (1950's)...developed from the humble Taylorcraft of course. But the gross weight for this one is 2650 lbs, and the wood spars & spar fittings are the same size as a BC12D. Go figure.

Just look at the stabilisers in the background, part-skinned in aluminium...what on earth for?

The object on the left is the fuselage, on its side. No engine. No interior. No glazing apart from windscreen. No doors or gear or wings or tailfeathers. Just the bare frame plus instruments & rudder pedals & sticks, yet it takes 4 (yes FOUR) people to lift it.

Such a dreadful bastardization of a classic design.

I persuaded the owner (through the company to which I am contracting) to cover it in Poly-Fibre, the first time for this company.

For which Jim & Dondi Miller can ultimately take the credit.

Where did you put the turret and main gun?

                Hank

At least with the Tank Treads you won't have to worry about having enough brakes. Who will be rebuilding the T-56 for power? ;-)

                  Re: Wing weights

Hank, you should see the brakes...floating disc brakes, enough to stop a Centurion tank. Certainly more stopping power than most light twins (think C310 or Baron).

The wheels & tyres weigh 40lb each side...

Anyway, hopefully dalijohn will get more useful input to his request than I have been able to offer.
