  • 2013 West Coast Taylorcraft Rendezvous

Everyone is invited to the West Coast Taylorcraft Rendezvous, May 24-26 (Memorial Day Weekend) at Frazier Lake Airpark (1C9) just a few miles north of Hollister, Calif.

Frazier Lake is a grass strip 2500 feet by 100 feet wide.... we also have a water runway if you want to use it. Camping in the grass next to your aircraft is OK and we have showers. If you want to stay at a local motel we will provide transportation.

We have invited Don Carr to speak at our get together Saturday night. Don's dad was a Taylorcraft dealer in Alaska in the late 1930's and 40's and he has a lot of great stories to tell. I'm sure you will find it very interesting. We are planning a movie night after the barbecue dinner Friday night. A flour bombing event is also planned for Friday or Saturday afternoon if there is interest. A fly-out for lunch is also being planned for Saturday. The plan is to just hang out and have a little fun together.

Since Hollister (7 miles south of Frazier Lake) is having their fly-in/airshow that weekend... we could if there is interest fly over as a group and spend Sunday at the fly-in/airshow and return to Frazier Lake or head home after the airfield is open for departures. Let's talk about this and see what people think.

Let me know that you are coming so that we can plan for food for Friday and Saturday dinner. I hope to see you there!

A few more pics. Jerry was an excellent host. The airport is truly unique. Grass and Water strip plus many Vintage and Classic aircraft plus lots of friendly people.
The young man is my grandson. He was the youngest participant to fly in. I only get to ride along now. The Stinson was owned by Pancho Barnes. We had 8 Taylorcraft this year. Next year is the 25th.

The 24th Rendezvous was a great fly-in well hosted by Jerry. The first picture is a rainbow over our flight line Sunday morning. The second shows Jerry's Ron's and my plane on display at the Hollister air show on Sunday. The next is a flight of 3 J3s over our flight line on Saturday. Next shows all 8, from the back, and last shows all 8 from the front, note the wind sock in the back ground, winds were 20-24 down the runway both Friday Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Re: 2013 West Coast Taylorcraft Rendezvous

All- I thought I would include a report/update on the 2013 Taylorcraft fly-in we had two weeks ago. From all the reports I received everyone had a great time visiting and making new friends. We had 8 Taylorcraft attend and three people with projects sharing photos. I believe everyone had plenty to eat and we enjoyed watching an old movie "Blaze of Noon" Friday night and the presentation by Don Carr on Taylorcraft's in Alaska on Saturday night. The 360 spot landing event and flour bombing were cancelled due to high winds (20-24mph most of the day Saturday). Other then winds the weather was perfect. Sunday morning three of us flew to the Hollister air show and enjoyed the day there. We did get to see Doctor "D" do his aerobatic routine in his 120hp clip wing Taylorcraft.... he does a nice job.

Here is a list of Taylorcraft attending:

I thought some would be interested to see the presentation by Don Carr on his dad's (Jack Carr) experiences in Alaska with Taylorcrafts. Here is part of his presentation. Note that Jack Carr specialized in repairing and flying damaged aircraft out of the bush. Also note the photos of a 65hp Taylorcraft towing a 65hp Taylorcraft at an airshow.
Here is video of Jack Carr in Alaska in the 1940's and 50's. I received this from his son Don Carr. Jack Carr was a Taylorcraft dealer in Alaska and specaili...

That is a great video! Don had shared some of those photos with me a few years ago for the Alliance flyin. The Miller airport listed on the back of one of the photos was owned and operated by my great uncle Russ miller. The field was N E of the factory for those that have been to the area. Uncle Russ was a huge in republic Seabees.
