Robert,
I was told by my long-term A&P/IA a separate logbook is not required, it can be included in the engine log. This came up a long time ago when I was preparing for my practical, (flight), test when the examiner was inspecting the aircraft's logs.Last edited by M Towsley; 02-04-2011, 21:27.Cheers,

Actually it is an airframe item. ( from an old time A&P; IA : Me ) Sometimes the "Propeller Log" was just pages in the back of the Airframe Log ; however when you sell the prop you have to tear them out.
OR just make one up and use it for each maintenance entry.

I don't know how you USA folks record propeller time.
Here in the UK, on BC12D Taylorcraft for example (and J3 Cubs and Aeroncas and Luscombes etc), we are NOT required to record anything other than the make, length & pitch of the prop fitted, and this is only recorded at each annual. No serial numbers.
So if, for example, a 2000 hour overhaul time becomes specified, and this is in some cases a "manufacturer recommendation", then we have no way of proving what prop has been fitted to what airframe.
I don't know whether this is a good thing or bad, but until fixed-pitch prop logbooks become a mandatory ICAO requirement, the prop I have fitted....was never fitted.

Prop log book...or a proper history of the prop is unimportant while YOU own the airplane. But....when YOU go to sell the airplane it MAY become quite important. If a novice buys the aircraft, maybe no problem. But..... if someone knowledgeable wants to buy it and the prop is a "mystery" prop it can get discouraging. Personally I would have to have proper papers with the aircraft history describing the prop. Has it been cut down? By who and when? Has it been repaired from a prop strike? By who? Currently I have a new McCauley 74-43 and it has a new log book with proper entrys, date manuf. Date installed, and by whom,etc. Occasionally, over the years, I have seen metal props on the walls of Various airports with one blade broken off. 3 of them had failed in mid air, one at my home airport. This type ocurrence ruins your daily schedule and people get excited when you land in their yard unannounced! Its a buyers market...be picky!JC

I have to disagree on the buyer's market comment, every used prop I have seen crop up on here has a tremendous response from buyers. They don't seem to last long...Cheers,

As I've said before, if you've been burned a few times, you become cautious! The last T-craft I bought had no prop papers but....it had a beautiful POLISHED older McCauley prop with a cut down piper spinner that was FIRST CLASS! Unfortunatley when annualed this year,as its illegal, neither prop or spinner would pass the annual. If you have the money to take a chance....by all means do it! Caveat emptor isn't it? In the current economy I suspect many more people take a chance, but you often wind up paying twice, or even more. (ps. you can see this prop and spinner by going to taylorcraft aircraft photos and scrolling to #6. N95916, taken at Mayville, N.Y. 2 yrs. ago.) JC

That happened to us, on the import of our airplane.. Picked up a prop with a log book.. The sn on the log book, matched the sn of the prop... good.... get 95% of the way through the import, and notice the 'freshly overhauled' green tag in the back says the SN is ****1 and not ****2... hmm.. Import inspector says 'take the prop off, send it in for an overhaul, because we don't know when this was overhauled now... Send it in, and the prop gets red tagged as scrap. now i got a nice fixed pitch prop that all its good for is polishing up and hanging in the hangar. Ended up going and buying a prop from the overhaul shop.. Atleast then we knew what we got... Items i wouldn't buy from someone unless they where considered 'cores' would be props, and engines. Too many crooks in the aviation business selling off their old crap.
