  • Trim Cable Guide

I'm working in Jerry Self's old t-craft for the new owner and I need the phanolic block that the cable runs through back at the tail. It is the one that mounts just in front of the elevator trim pulley and directly over the cross brace where the down elevator stop is located. Please let me know if anyone can help.
    Thanks

    Kevin:

I did the UK equivalent of an "Owner produced part". This phenolic fairlead is lined with copper to lubricate the cable; quite difficult to remanufacture as per the drawing, so I chose to make one out of solid copper (busbar) on the basis that it was stronger than the original (fit, form & function remains the same...even the FAA's QA dept would accept that!).

I chose to ignore the slight increase in weight from the original (less than 10 grammes) ....but you may see in the photo that I necked it down where I could to minimise the weight increase.

Jon Timlin came over to the UK with his then-teenage son Jason at the time I was ready to make it, and Jason made it for me with a hacksaw.

Use delrin or nylatron sheet self lubricating less weight.

            Joe,
I'll measure it and see exactly how think and long it needs to be.

Surely someone in the US stocks copper busbar?

If you email (or PM) me a mailing address & I'll send you some.

                    Re: Trim Cable Guide

Telecom uses plates full of holes that they bolt cables to for grounding junctions in Central Offices. I have a 4" x 12" bar here but its full of holes...

Any metal dealer (place that sells steel plate and dimensional stuff) will usually also deal in other metals. One place I used to go had a shed just for copper and a lot of scrap they bought back from electrical manufactures, it was common to see a bars the size Rob used
in a bucket and sold at the market price for copper.

If copper is the way you choose to go...

I it you need stuff what is a bit unsuall, lock in the phone book for industrial suppliers, they have many usefull items like Sheat rubber, copper bars, Nylon, teflon, etc, in bar and sheatstock, their is also a plastic out there EPMD wears good and low cost.

                          Re: Trim Cable Guide

Guys, you must understand that we have a Rite Aid (Drug store) in town which is the only place that develops pics. There one hour photo service takes a full day at best and to have anything put on CD they mail off and sometimes you get them back and sometimes you don't....same with the one hour pics.It takes at least a day and sometimes two for the Rite Aid clerk to show them to everyone in town before they tell you there ready for pick up,by the time you get them back and look at them for the first time everyone you meet in town is already telling you what they thought about them. As for hardware stores or electrical supplies.....if your lucky you buy cheap plywood, rotted 2x4's,and an extention cord at only 3 times the price of Wal-mart or Lowes. The nearest town with anything normal is 40 miles away and between working in the hanger, four kids who all have after school activities, and a wife who works 12 hours plus per day it doesn't leave a lot of time to just run to Wal-Mart. The other day I was telling the new store clerk at one of the gas stations why I was buying 70 gallons of 93 oct gas and she said I knew you had always been a pilot but I didn't know there was an airport in town. After I decribed to her where it was at she said ,"well, that's why I see airplanes flying real low over the store all the time". I graduated highschool with this girl and have even taken her and her boyfriend an airplane ride once while we were in high school.....from this airport! This should tell you how clueless the people in this town can be. It really is a great place to live, people are still so far behind the times that they still run out in the yard a yell "aaaipwane" when someone flies over, and you should also see what the kids do too.lol We are starting to grow a little bit..just last year the local Fast Lane/Food Court added an Arbey's then they replaced the fuel pumps with new digital credit card pumps,I don't think anyone has ever used the credit card slot yet....not locals anyway, ain't many round here has a credit card. One guy told me he tried 4 time before the SOBin thang took his drivers license and he couldn't get them out. Ya'll come down and see us sometime...it's worth the trip just to see how great life can still be when you get away from the real world.
