Two questions on that one. Is that an oversize rudder or stock size for the BL65, and with those big tires do they still run bungees or is the gear welded solid? Any ideas?

Prewar rudders are shorter but wider than a post war airplane. Yes they still have bungies, they just weld a brace from one of the main down tubes to the diagonal streamlined tube this keeps it from collapsing the gear when side loading the gear. The big tires act like landing on a marshmallow, they adsorb impact from landing but also act like a big brake when they stick to the ground. Tim

Prewar rudders are also 3 hinge where postwar are 2 hinge. I've had several of both & the prewars always fly better IMHO. My'38 showed a wt of 625# on the data plate.

A local recently had his right gear diagonal quit holding hands while on skis. Separated mid-span and no brace was previously installed. Gear bent up until the safety cable caught then bent/broke the upper A-frame at the gear legs. Got lucky...it happened at my camp so they had tools and fixits close. I wasn't there. Rumors that both gears were internally corroded and drain holes installed per SB.
