Prewar rudders are shorter but wider than a post war airplane. Yes they still have bungies, they just weld a brace from one of the main down tubes to the diagonal streamlined tube this keeps it from collapsing the gear when side loading the gear. The big tires act like landing on a marshmallow, they adsorb impact from landing but also act like a big brake when they stick to the ground. TimN29787

Prewar rudders are also 3 hinge where postwar are 2 hinge. I've had several of both & the prewars always fly better IMHO. My'38 showed a wt of 625# on the data plate.Eric Richardson
