  • Interesting "junkyard" find?

    Hi,

This popped up and it's just curious as to what its story might be.

Too bad it is Cub yellow, but someone in SoCal ought to go put some eyeballs on her. Be a shame if she got scrapped.

If you talk to the seller, bring up that "life time" cover. NOT ON YOUR LIFE! Which it would be! The covering might be lifetime (but I don't believe it) but the structure under the cover sure won't be. I would be pushing HARD to lower the price based on the very real potential for damage under the fabric. You might get lucky, or you might get real UN lucky, but the seller should share the cost of the risk. Could be a great deal just waiting for a cover job......or not. That risk is how you arrive at the price.

He is in our neck of the woods. I called and talked to him. "Grandfather" got on the phone. He's 89 years old and thinks it's time to sell. He has an airstrip down the middle of his junkyard. I guess none of the kids are flying.

I looked at it last Spring when it was on craigslist for $12,500. The good: Cover looked good under the dust. pulled prop through and compression was good. Prop is new as I recall. Looked at the spars in a couple of places and saw no problems. The bad: Interior was dirty, stained and deteriorating. There was surface rust on all of the exposed steel hardware. Controls felt a little stiff to me.

I decided to pass on it.

Sounds more and more like a complete rebuilder. A together plane is worth something...provided the tubing is not all rusted.

It might make a great family or group restoration project. Maybe the current owner could donate it to a good cause for others to learn and benefit. Like a living will.

Lately I've started sharing and giving things I've haven't used in a long time with the young that will outlive me.

Thanks for checking it out. With the airstrip down the middle of the yard that explains how it was where it was at in the pictures. Still if you are going to store something for 20 years, inside, in the dark, mostly dry, SoCal environment is about as good as it would get. Hope it finds a home.
