  • Pre war MultiguageTach Oil Pressure & Oil Temp on eBAY

Anyone here bidding on or selling the pre-war multiguage on eBAY at

I would like to get in touch with whoever gets it to make drawings so replicas can be made in the future. Almost everything needed to make a replica will also need to be done to restore this one and this is a chance to add information to our database for future restorers.

Who is selling and who is buying? Anyone?

    Hank

Well, appears to be a Cub or Piper guy. Send him a message and have him let the winner know what you would like to do.
    Cheers,

Hank, I have one for my 38 that is all there and I won't be using it for some time. I would be glad to send it to you and you can get what you need for information off of it and send it back after your done?

That would be great. Does it work or are you going to need for it to be overhauled? One thing that made the one on eBAY attractive is it was incomplete and had already been disassembled. I DO NOT want to take one apart that is working. Too much risk that a working cluster could become a NON-working cluster!
I would like to see if a silk screen company could make a negative of the face so new ones could be made and old ones re-faced. Also need to measure the glass face to see if it has a curved front. We have a clock repair guy here who is really old school and I might be able to find new glass for them. The metal parts might actually be the easiest part. Splash molds to make pressing bucks would let us reproduce all the parts.

Typical for me. Another huge project that will take me decades to finish to the point of a working part. ;-) I can't get old! I have too much to do!

Hank, I was down this road 25 years ago. I had a silk screens made and screen printed my instrument for my award winning BL. I replaced the curved glass with one from a clock supplier. I also printed one for dad's model A that says Taylorcraft on the face just like the originals. I think the artwork is still at my dad's place, along with the silk screening fixture. I had a couple different screens. The different engines used clusters with different markings. The mechanicals can be repaired by John Wolfe and Company.

Nothing makes taking a new road easier than finding out someone else has already blazed the trail!

Can you find out if the original negatives for the face plate still exist (the actual silk screens I imagine are long gone, but new ones are easy with the negative!)

The same for the replacement glass. If there is a replacement number that is great, but without that we will probably need to have an example. I know the replacements are out there, but almost impossible to find without the diameter and radius of curvature of the original glass.

If we can make a DIGITAL negative changing the markings on the face would be a snap.

Relax Hank, I ran the engine to do a leak down test when I got the project. All the gages worked. I am sure someone had changed the oil temp at some time by the way it is mounted in the cluster. I will try and send you some pic. and see if you would like to try and get what you need. You are not responsible for anything. I was not going to have it overhauled right off but would be glad to pay for silk screening or what ever. I will take some pic. and send them.

I just don't want to risk a working instrument to get the information if there is a lower risk way. I spent a lot of time not flying because of broken parts trying to make replacements.

The Tribe really needs to build a database of information so we can keep our planes flying........FOREVER! Only way to do that is to be able to make ANY part if needed. We will run out of original available parts someday.

If the factory could make it back then, we should be able to make it now. If will just cost a fortune in time and money! ;-)

Is anyone here bidding on the eBAY one? I don't want to snipe a Tribe member (unless of course a Tribe member is also selling it!)

I understand. It is a standing offer if you you want it.

Hank, the artwork is a photo positive instead of a negative, and I think they are still at dad's shop. It has been 25 years after all.

Positive or negative probably won't matter once it is digital (which would be the way to do it so the temp ranges and markings can be customized to the engine).

If we can make replicas as Owner Produced (since it is really only the "carrier and glass cover" and not the actual instruments, kind of like the instrument panel on a later model) the guys who are totally nuts for original could use the real antiques, since if they are that much for "original" they will want original engines too (Hey, I understand those guys....I am one).

For the 40 I want to restore (Josh Brehm's old plane) I would have no problem with a replica cluster and retrofitted engine. It was what he wanted and was always supposed to be a FLYER, not a museum piece. My 45 is the one I want to be as close to original as humanly possible (can you say Cotton and dope?). The 41 is somewhere in between. Looks and is very close, but is for flying more than display.

Short answer (you guys all know you will NEVER actually get one of those from me!) yes, I would like to copy it. Depending on what ti goes for I may also bid on the one on eBAY.
