Re: Martin or Taylorcraft Clips Wanted

I would not use the ACS "Martin" wire at all.

The bends are not accurate, the spacing is wrong. I doubt it conforms to the type design, so should be banned and all stocks destroyed.

THEN we can get some made under "OPP" or other approval.

    Here's the comparison:

Looks like if you took a fine pair or pliers & bent the locking hook on the Martins to more closely resemble the Taylorcraft wires that 1/8" would likely disappear.

I had thought about that. A manual tool/guide to do that would be a lot simpler than a tool to make the clips from straight wire. I have some Taylorcraft clips, does anyone have a piece of Martin wire? Could be used and only needs to be 3 or 4 clips in length.

Hank, I included a piece of unused Martin clip wire(about 10 inches long) in the envelope containing my order/address form and check for 4 of the 9010HD bungees. I missed the postman, so it should head south tomorrow. I bought enough of the ACS Martin clip wire to do my BC12-D...probably 15 years ago. The mechanic who was overseeing my recover job tried installing the Martin wire...did about 2 ribs and said "that's not going to work on anything I sign off on." He pulled it off and it's been hanging on the wall ever since. I measured a piece of Taylorcraft clip wire and it miked at .0325 inches in diameter....the Martin clip wire showed .0335 inches. Because the Martin wire (from ACS) is about an 1/8 inch longer between the insert points, it "humps up" when you try to fit it in holes 3 inches apart. It is coiled from the factory with a "hump" anyway, and when you insert the points in the holes on the ribs, the hump is even more pronounced when you try to compensate for the extra 1/8 inch of length. The Taylorcraft wire is exactly the right length and the shape of the insert point is different. One works and the other doesn't. Dick

Thanks. It will be interesting to see if I can figure a way to modify the Martin wire. I have some Taylorcraft wire from a wing I tore down and some stamped ribs to test with. If we can't modify the Martin wire maybe I can design a fixture to make some replacement Taylorcraft wire.

Just ordered one roll of clips from Spruce to check em out. Spruce claims they fit the Tcraft. Will let you know.

Well, I just got one roll of clips from Aircraft Spruce. They advertise 3" spacing, and the guy on the phone even said they were 3". Anybody wanna guess? 3 1/8". Just wasted some postage but I have my answer. Looks like rib stitching for me. Too bad. I agree that someone should be able to make it the size we need. Just too busy to address it, except that it my be less time consuming than rib stitching. Hmmm?

Quote them the Sale of Goods & Services Act 1982 (as amended). They are selling goods not fit for the original purpose, in other words they are selling defective goods, so you should get back your outlay + shipping.

It's obvious that the bends are not tight enough. If they were, the extra 1/8 inch would miraculously disappear.

I wonder if a CNC wire bending or perhaps a spring manufacturer would be able to make the wire? After all, it's just a few bends, but without the twiddly windings that make springs round.

There is an STC to use PK screws, STC SA1-217.

There has been some discussion here about the stamped ribs do not have the best contour for rib stitching.

Rib stitching is out for me and my ribs, and the thought of several hundred screws didn't sit well, so I used Pop rivets with the 3/8 inch head, found a paper from a NY FSDO from a while back that said that style of pop rivet was acceptable to replace the screws, will put that in with the paperwork when I get done, gary
